Bulb Wattage Incorrect

Hello! I bought this chandelier and installed 18 40W dimmable Edison bulbs which ended up frying my dimmer switch and now it no longer works. The chandelier works but the dimmer switch does not and also heats up almost instantly. It seems that 18 40W bulbs is too much too handle. Please advise!
