Oakland Hills Midcentury Modern: Nursery

The room we selected to be our son’s nursery didn’t quite say fun, playful and youthful like we knew the finished product could. Floor to ceiling dark wood paneling, with wood beams running across the ceiling and outdated lighting gave this space a very dated look. The room had existing hardwood flooring, so at least that portion of the room had already been tackled and the finish worked well with the new hardwoods selected for the living and dining areas.
This space was very dark to begin with, so we decided to paint the paneling on the walls and ceiling beams with a bright coat of white. The change was night and day. To give the room a more youthful appearance, we selected a vibrant shade of orange to paint the ceiling in-between the beams similar to the dining room. Throughout the house we used bright colors in strategic places to add a sense of fun and vitality while balancing it with softer palettes elsewhere.
In addition to the painted ceiling, the striped curtains and playful rug are among the cheerful elements of this bedroom. The custom glider with nailhead detail and contrast welt, modern metal light fixture, and tri-tone mobile from the MoMA store elevate this colorful and indestructible boys’ bedroom.
