Laundry Room Layout Dilemma

last modified: 8 years ago

We are weeks away from moving in our newly built home. We went ahead and moved our washer and dryer over tonight and it is not at all how I imagined it after seeing it on paper. Now I’m scrambling to find the best solution for placement of my washer and dryer. They fit as drawn in the plans, but further from the wall than I expected. Also, the space between the dryer and caninets is not very roomy. One solution I had was to buy a new stackable set and stack them where the washer is now. The only problem with that is that my dryer vent is where I’ve circled red on the layout. I’ll post several pictures so you can see my issue. It looks more crowded in pictures than it actually is because you can’t see the space between the dryer and cabinets. Any ideas or does stacking them seem like the best solution?

Unless it is an optical illusion there is no way you can stand and open the drawers in the cabinets next to the dryer. I think the stacking ones is the best idea since you have a counter to fold on

Yes, there is enough room to stand in front of the counter next to the dryer, but the cabinet door/drawer will need to be closed. I admit it looks really tight in the pic. I will try to get a picture while standing in front of the dryer so you can better see the space.

Seems would have been better to have swapped positions of the cabinets and machines (with the dryer in the corner so it could vent out the side wall), although the laundry sink may not fit there. It could have gone on the wall behind the bathroom sink.

You are right dadoes, but that’s not the way we built it and now I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle placement. The sink was a must for me and I think it would have been odd laid out any other way. I’m thinking a stacked set is my only option.

I installed a”Dryerbox” to get a few extra inches space in a (way too small for a full size stack) laundry closet. It may help give you the few inches you need. Dryerbox

Just to say, I would never have a stacked set unless there's absolutely no other way to arrange them. It's horrible for service being that the dryer must be removed for pretty much *any* action to the washer. I have a friend who bought an early 1960s foreclosure house as a rental property. It was built with washer connections in a corner of the kitchen (next to the refrigerator) and no provision for a dryer. Previous owners had put a 240v circuit for a dryer in the one-car garage. He opted to put a stacked pair in the kitchen. Had a situation with the washer's water valve seeping last year, which thankfully ended up being a false alarm. I seriously dreaded the prospect of pulling down the dryer to change the washer's inlet valve. It took three guys (average, not wrestlers, LOL) to get it up there. Frontload-match dryers tend to be heftier than topload-match units, possibly more weight for stability when stacked.
