Wall Art Advice Needed

last modified: 8 years ago

So, now that I've replaced my rug (thank you for the suggestion) and purchased a chandelier, I need some wall art. The room is 11' x 13", color on walls BM 1565 "Mt. Saint Anne." I love the colors in the rug and want to pull more orange/red. The tray table is temporary until I find a plant stand. The room needs "umph" but I don't want to clutter it.

Is your fixture white? I am confused by styles in this room. So hard to figure out your art. I am not crazy about that chandelier. It seems too kitchen breakfast like but maybe it is just the brightness of the fixture. I will look around for some wall treatments for you. Can you post a photo with the light dimmed please?

By wall art do you mean paintings? Or, ? You don't give clues to what you like.

    Figurative?

    Mixed Media?

    Abstract

    A Landscape?

    Birds?

    FOOD?

    A mirror? Shelves?

How about some art like this idea? Not my picture think this is a Dina Holmes design.

I have been experimenting with different art pieces and this is going to be a bit challenging. The strength of the rug flowers and color becomes the art. Would you consider something like an Asian screen mounted as art? With a gold metallic background it could work with the rug. Another possibility is a line of possibly 4 pieces of sculpted wood pieces or 3 dimensional sculpted pieces. Need a bit more info since art is so personal.

This is a conundrum... but fortunately for you, Houzzers like a challenge. :) I like the landscape Terrilynn posted but as everyone is saying, it's your house. What moves you? I was also trying to find something textural or sculptural, but nothing seemed to fit. Maybe a twig panel (horizontally) or this art?

Here is small mock up with simple off white Draper, some architecturally interest mirrors and a more transitional fixture with a white drum shape and a little glam. Softer light as well

    Monet's.

I am generally not a big fan of quotes on walls, but with your area rug I may want to keep things simple and just paint a quote on the wall and maybe add a candle or wall sconce on either side. I like this, but the quote should be something that is meaningful to you...

My chandelier, which I'm keeping and a sampling of framed art that I love. I really like the idea of keeping the carpet the centerpiece and having something somewhat subtle on the walls, just don't know if I should do multiple 8 x 10 framed pictures with abstract color or a large wall hanging, whether metal or abstract landscape?

I love many of the beautiful art being suggested for you however the rug will fight with great art. So if you really want nice art in this room, I suggest you return the rug and select something with a more subtle pattern. Check out the many on line choices or at places that carry rugs in your price range. Pottery Barn, has some nice tone on tone rugs you might consider. Good sales today too.

That is pretty Prple! Just know that if you want subtle you might want less white. White is bright.

Saying that though, your picture is nice and would look good but not exactly subtle if you are firm on that.

You could try a different matting like the creamy/light warm beige-y in the rug.

Maybe minimalist ? Or, something like?

I like the mock up by FloMangan, it's pretty close to perfection with that look.

The rug is gorgeous, and I love your light fixture. Have you thought about some wall art that is bronzetone wrought iron? I also do like the picture you are showing above.

Luxe Property Staging had the best idea. I wonder if a grouping of these would work. http://publicdomainreview.org/collections/the-flowers-personified-1847/  matted and framed they would not overpower your rug and a group of them would cover the wall. AND they would look good with the picture you have that you love.

They are public domain with a link to download hi res.

justerri's repeat of rug's colors seemed quite nice to me. A landscape is nice too. Wouldn't place your flowers with flowered rug.... unless it were in a grouping.

Love this one, what do you think?

Love the rug with the color on the walls!

I agree about the light fixture. The pic up above that Beverly posted shows how much better the room looks with a new chandelier, drapes and brown blinds.

But I wouldn't do wall art. Would just put either one long, or a few brown shelves up, then have a couple of books, and vases with cream or orange flowers. I think anything else will be too busy with the rug.

I like what you picked - is it square? I don't agree that everything will be too much with your rug. I might like to see adjoining area....

You haven't mentioned curtains - do you like the softening of them, I do....

You need curtains first. They will add a great deal of warmth to the room. And you need a sideboard/server or some such on one wall. A mirror used above a sideboard would be very nice. THEN start looking for art. Go to local galleries, antique stores, art fairs, before ever going online. One need never apologize for a blank wall. Wait until art that you love comes your way.

Beverly - where did you find the chandelier you suggested?
