There are three different major pool types: Gunite, Vinyl and Fiberglass. Availability of each of these can be somewhat dependent on where you are and what the builders in your area are competent at installing. I would do some independent research into the three to see which you would prefer. A lot is determined by what amenities you want in the pool as well as what you budget is.

you need to think REALLY HARD about how you want the pool deck organized. where do you want grass? where will you sit for sun? where will you sit for shade?

we bought a home with a pool in 2000 and lived with the previous owners deck decisions til 2 years ago. in those years we kept looking at how the sun blasted the grass in one area and how there was no place to put a sun lounger in shade.

so we redid the pool decking (it needed it....) and reconfigured it to have decking where we wanted it and grass where the grass would do well. we're really happy.

look at where you will put your pool, see where the sun shines (and where it doesnt) and you're sure to do a better job than the original owners of our house.

Even with pool companies that advertise "total outdoor living", they're usually not landscape designers. If you want the most successful project (for example, anticipating the issue ninigret mentioned above) - involve a landscape designer from the start.

our pool has a vinyl liner, its nice to be able to change the color of the pool every dozen years or so.
