I like the idea of a horizontal mirror over the dresser too - but maybe the one pictured is too small? I'd opt for a longer rectangle that almost matches the length of the dresser. Don't go for a wood frame - I think between the other furniture (love that bed) and floors you have enough natural wood. Maybe a tile, metal or other material for the frame - I'm thinking Moroccan or Mexican (see photos).

Curtains below the molding - I agree with the 1st Nancy on that too.

Bedding: if you'd like to try something bold but are feeling commitment-phobic I'd go for a bedspread or duvet cover so you don't invest too much; browse overstock.com and hit a Home Goods so you will not feel guilty if you don't love your purchase, if you need to relegate it to a guest room.

I can't tell what colors you like because everything pictured is so neutral. If that's you're thing, how about a fresh pattern but in neutrals? Like a trellis or chevron or ikat but in white and khaki or gray?

I found some bedding on sale at Pottery Barn--I don't know when the sale is off, but you might like something there.

Thank you for your comments. I think it is more complicated then it first appears. I love the bed, but can't stand the dresser, which almost reads mid-century modern to me. I don't want a gold mirror, the accents on the furniture are gold. I was thinking maybe a large circular mirror from Ethan Allen. Any thoughts on that? Thank you.

For me, the bedding and the animal print throw are wrong together. I like the throw more than the bedding. Every room can use a black piece. Why not paint the dresser black. A mirror needs to go over it. It is a long dresser, a rectangular one first comes to mind but the *right* round one could work.

A large round mirror would be great to counter all of the square shapes in the room.

Do you want to personalize the room more? Have any special photographs of loved ones or colors that you love to maybe transfer to canvas or frame. Or some kind of unique item that you haven't considered putting on the wall before. A re-purposed item can be kinda fun. Very lovely room that is coming together.

You're right bluenan, there are too many square shapes! My husband wants to get rid of the dresser, then have to find a dresser that goes with the bed.

Is the mirror/window frame work behind the head of the bed actually part of the bed? Can it be removed? That is way too busy and you've got the squares of the windows, the square of the canopy bed and then all those little squares. Too many squares in that small area.

If you can't remove the squares then hang a curtain that will compliment you beautiful bedding over them. That will soften the look.

Yikes, I see more squares on the ceiling. Paint the ceiling all one color, trim and all.

Your room will be far more interesting and warmer feeling if you add a painting over your dresser. If you feel you need a mirror the add a large floor mirror. Your room is big and bold enough for a full length mirror.

I don't think the dresser is the problem. It's beautiful and looks like a quality piece of furniture. You're room will really come together if you just get rid of the squares behind the bed. So overpowering and heavy and square!

Leelee, yes, the mirrored headboard is attached to the bed. It is all one unit. You are right about too many squares, I never thought about that before. What about a round mirror over dresser? Any suggestions for bedside tables? I don't really care for these.

I was afraid of that! But you can use curtains to hide them completely. That will make an amazing difference in your room.

The room is lovely and BIG! Everything in it looks great except that headboard and the ceiling squares.

It's a great room, and I love the bed, too! It is a little symmetrical - are there other walls available to place the chair and table arrangement? I don't know if theres space in your room to do so but that might tone the "perfectly square" feeling down a bit to have the seating area off set from the bed.

I was looking at the bedside tables and I'm not crazy about them. It would look better to replace at least one of them and move away from the matchy look. You could use something more substantial looking without glass tops.

Lori, there is a TV on the wall across from the chairs. We have to keep them there. Do you think the furniture looks dated? We purchased it 30 years ago, my husband thinks we should replace it.

Just my opinion, but the headboard is ruining the look of your room. It doesn't fit with your other decor which is super nice & well done.

Yes, you are right, the side tables don't really belong. Maybe too light for such a heavy bed? They are repurposed coffee tables.

If your husband is up for replacing the bed, go for it. Oh, and the bedside tables, too.

Take pictures of your bedroom and measurements when you start to look for new furniture. After 30 years you've gotten your money's worth. Keep the dresser and the chairs. Please consider a painting, too.

One thing you don't want to do is go to a big box furniture store and by the whole room that all matches...I didn't think you'd want that but just thought I should mention it (in case)

I like the bed, you obviously chose it because you do as well. I like the dresser also, it compliments the bed and doesn't look like something everyone else has. I do think the bedside tables are too low and small and matchy. You can use a chest by the bed as an end table and an open piece on the other side perhaps a soft white or grey. Your room has a soft and serene look, but lacks just a bit of contrast. Choose bedding that has a color that can be pulled out and used elsewhere. Nancy's bedding suggestions are nice, but look similar to what you have. Are you looking to change them out or just enhance? I like the ceiling, it adds interest to room.

I want to try and work with what we have, I realize it looks thrown together, because I pulling pieces from other rooms in my house. I know the room needs some new pieces, there is an answer to making it work with the bed and the dresser, just having trouble finding it.
Agree that the room has to many squares, too many angles, the side tables are wrong and the walls are boring. Also, think the rug and small round table are too small.

I think it's great furniture, and commend you for really trying to make it work - but it looks as though you may be getting a new bedroom suite:)

I'm sorry but I must disagree about the ceiling...more squares in your room are just what you don't need. You don't need the distraction of a busy ceiling.

You can certainly use a painted piece next to wood, you have the little painted table already in the room. Adding something different will mix it up and make it look collected, which is what it sounds like you've done. That, to me, makes a room much more interesting and personal. Decide what colors you like and look for bedding with that accent, or go with neutral and add an accent color in art, large lamps on the dresser, a throw or decorative pillows. An accent color doesn't have to shout, it can be subtle. I would avoid anymore mirrors or mirrored surfaces except for over the dresser. I do like leelee's suggested painting above for your space, as well.

A dresser with legs on one side a round table on the other, perhaps. How about painting the ceiling a very, very pale blue or aqua and use that as an accent color?

They don't have to be, but you may be happier with a less eclectic look.

gdrules, your room as it is designed is a very formal space, so going more symmetrical wouldn't be such a bad thing, especially if you find something you really love in a night table. I think you should concentrate on one thing at a time; i.e. find your bedding, then your draperies, then your mirror, etc. There is a lot of confusion created in jumping from one item to another, and it leads to indecision. You never responded to the photos of the bedding I posted back at the beginning of the dilemma--what you liked about it, what you didn't. Keep in mind the color doesn't really matter at this point, that can be determined once you decide the direction you want to go. The one jarring thing in the whole room, I think, are the plantation shutters. They are very hard lines in a room which should be all about softness and serenity.

Because you have a four poster bed, I wouldn't go with different styled side tables. I love that look, but just can't see it with the "formality" of the other pieces. In fact, the more I think about it ... that might be the problem? The dresser is a really nice mid-century piece, the chairs/ottoman are kind of classic traditional, the little round table is more country ... I won't even try to classify the current side tables as you plan on getting something else. Any of these would be a great "starting point" but the room doesn't "feel" eclectic, even though the elements clearly are :-). I think the four poster is what's holding you back. It just has such strong lines. I "think" that if you had just an upholstered head board, one that matched more with your chairs, everything would start coming together.

Since the bed and the dresser are from the same set, do you think it will look odd if the two side tables are in a different style? Should I try to find two painted pieces that are similar in shape to the dresser?
I used the glass tables, because they just blend in, but they are the wrong size. Would larger glass tables work better than painted pieces?

I would say no to the glass tables. Just try to find tables that have a similar wood in a similar finish, maybe mirrored side tables with wood trim that is close in color to the other pieces. Make sure they are as tall as the top of the mattress or a little bit taller.

Nancy, I thought about mirrored side tables, but maybe it might be too much as there are mirrors on the head board. Also, I don't want it to look like I tried to match the existing furniture but failed, so I thought painted pieces would be a good idea.

True, I forgot about that, so scratch that. So go back to what I said about the wood.

gdrules, I took a look on wayfair.com and most of the painted pieces are too cottagey or early american for your set. The contemporary painted pieces are stark white or black. I have found some others that might work, but your best bet is to take a drawer from your dresser and go to furniture stores to try and match the color of the wood.
