I think you could use something in 2 areas between your house and the street. First, some plantings along your house, to soften the edge, and then something along the road.
I'm a fan of privacy so I'd personally go for a line of fast-growing evergreens along the road - you have enough yard to spare for a broad tree (which I think faster-growing varieties tend to be).
Near the house, maybe some clustered beach grass near the steps, one or two tall spire trees (eg juniper or an arborvitae that doesn't spread out too much). Maybe some hydrangea for fullness.
A deciduous tree near the house would add a different silhouette. If you don't want something that will get huge and/or create an autumn raking nightmare, maybe a classic dogwood or Japanese maple.
