Design Dilemma Living Room

Suggestions on how to update this fireplace?

I don't know if I should keep the original color, or stone part of it. Any suggestions?

I see only two solutions possible:
1. Select a light gray or beige color in the brick to paint the flat wall above.
2. Paint the brick a color which harmonizes with your furnishings.

There are people who will tell you to never paint the brick, but every problem is different. The big blank wall is powerful. A significant large piece of art probably would not improve it, but you could try that. Even if the rest of the walls stay white, I would want to make the fireplace wall appear more unified.

Yes, if you cover the brick with stacked stone, it could be better. It will depend upon your budget. Stacked stone often has a range of colors which will be good with your carpet, if it is staying.

You could always do a white wash over the brick. Easy and affordable?

I like it as it is, the geometric shapes of the brick add to the 'blocked' effect, which is a very typical modernist style. But then you would need to follow through with the style, I think. I mean this kind of look -- it's all about shapes.

Its a handsome fireplace. The brick is very nice. If you just paint the wall above in a gray from the brick, it would look harmonious. I like it minimalistic and clean, so I wouldn't glop it up with art or decor.
