My choice mandarin!

After trying a halve dozen mandarins i come to the conclusion that my Page is still on top. Shi-shan, shiranue and the ones in the stores, nah! I still have about a couple dozen on the tree, been eating one every day to test the taste. Its a little early yet but already excellent. So what to do next spring, i'll make some more Pages,at least 3 more than i can scrap the others.

I still think if they crossed Page with a Dekopon it would be the best. Or maybe cross Satsuma with a Duncan grapefruit and then cross that with Kishu.

Page mandarins are, after all, a cross between Minneola Tangelo (Dancy x Duncan grapefruit) and Clementine. This type of hybrid isn't really all that unusual, being akin to the traditional tangor-type family of citrus fruits in Japan (laying somewhere on the spectrum between orange and mandarin). Dekopons themselves are in fact basically a tangor-mandarin cross. What I'm saying is that basically all these mandarins have a small amount of Citrus maxima in their distant ancestry.

Could you post some pictures of your flowering seed grown kumquat tree. You very well,l my be the only one on the planet that has seen flowers on a seed grown kumquat tree. What variety is your kumquat. How old is it.

Page isn’t even on my list for mandarins. Should it be? I have a miho Satsuma and Tango. I want a GN, either Yosemite or Shasta Gold, maybe a kishu, probably a California honey...it’s so hard to tell from the descriptions, so I lean heavily on forum members recs

Bob, that’s great! I can’t wait to try a page. I like mandarins that have a little acid...not just sweet. Does the page have any acid undertones?

Steve, this picture is about a week or so old and it does have small starter flowers on it. The tree is about 4 years old.The seeds came from a tree belonging to a local nursery that has this 7 ' tree growing in the corner of a kind of crummy greenhouse. I pass this place once a week in the spring/summer to buy vegetable plants and pick some fruits, eat the whole thing and spit out the seeds, except a couple. Trim this tree a little so it can roll in the garage easily.
Laura, most old time citrus growers is a must have. I am not kidding. Btw, i am not an old citrus timer but i,m an old timer, this thing is right up your ally, it's juicy, not overly sweet, lots of tang. Go for it!
