Wow! I love how the porch now has two access points. Great vision. Also love the new window and stonework on the side of the garage - scored big points on the curb appeal with that.

In my opinion it looked better before. The house has lost it's farm character!

What a beautiful setting for a lovely house.

I really would have liked different shape than the rounded tops of those upper windows. It makes the remodel already look dated. I would have the transom a more traditional square shape that holds a historical appearance rather than the "look at me" appearance of those installed. I think it takes away from the whole of the house design. And, in such a beautiful setting, it sticks out alike a sore thumb.

Amazing transformation, it looks like a completely different home in the after pics. I like the palladian windows on each end (even though purists won't, lol). To me they soften the otherwise rather harsh edges on the building, and the light in those rooms must be fantastic. Raising the roof over the garage was genius-what did you do with the new space?

As for historic and architectural considerations, all I can say is the pre-remodel building looks like a late 70s-early 80s farmhouse wannabe and I think you've done a fabulous job bringing that tired lady into the 21st century whilst retaining all of what was good about farmhouse style homes. The double end porch is lovely in my eyes, will you be putting rocking chairs or other front porch furniture out there? What a nice place to relax with a pitcher of fresh-squeezed lemonade or iced tea!

Love the extra space you achieved, but I preferred the windows you had before. The arched windows I don't feel suit the style. The before exterior house colour is warmer and less dull then the new colour. The before photo had character, definition and boldness while the after photo sameness, dull, to much symmetry and the look and feel of the suburb's. A change of colour and rip out the arch windows would probably go same way to fixing.

Totally agree with carolannr. The arched tops of the windows are all wrong and the bottom window of the extension with its separate ribbed roofing is out of syncwith the rest of the build. I would have continued the porch right across the front of the house, matched the extended roofline with the existing one and kept the look of the windows uniform and in a more traditional style.

I love the combination of window design styles. It shows a difference for architectural details without becoming boring. Very nice and well balanced.

Frankly, it no longer has charm and character at all. It now looks like every McMansion around nowadays. Perhaps that is what the owner was going for, but to my eye, very sad when older buildings are remuddled like this.

We love what Bay Area Design to our old house!! They kept some of the Arch top windows and tried to blend our large addition to the existing house so that it did not look like multiple remodeling projects. We have a very large family and needed the new Bedrooms. As far as somebody calling our home a McMansion, that was in poor taste. We never wanted to move just Improve and we think we did. God Bless!

Stacy, I am very sorry I hurt your feelings. I live in a farm house over 100 years old and it sits among thousands of huge houses that look *exactly* like yours. That nick name is so common where I live that it didn't occur to me it would offend. Not everyone is going to love what you did. What I wrote is only my opinion. It shouldn't matter to you if you truly feel you improved your house! I probably shouldn't have made a less than positive comment. Lesson learned.

@Stacy Hebb-scroll up and read my earlier comment-I think your home looks lovely! How old is the original structure, am I correct that it was built sometime in the 1970s or 1980s?

Your original, if I'm correct about the build date, was meant to look like a farmhouse home (cosy, comfortable, friendly) whilst proving all the benefits of 'the modern age' of dishwashers, plenty of bathrooms and bedrooms for a growing family. It was lovely but ready to come into the 21st century whilst retaining all of the good things about the farmhouse style.

Your designer did that VERY well, your home's new face is GORGEOUS.

My husband is a retired historic building conservation officer here in Scotland. He reads over my shoulder on Houzz, lol, and at first he was not happy about the new face on your home. Then I did a Google Images search of 70s-80s era American farmhouse architecture and made him scroll through those images. Next I did a search for genuine American farmhouses c1880-1905...

He is the purist I was referring to, in my previous comment, lol! But once he saw the difference between a genuine American farmhouse and the ones built in the 70s&80s, he did a complete U-turn and thinks what you and your designer achieved is fantastic. I enlarged the picture of the home pre-remodel and pointed out the Palladian window on the original structure. He says your designer created a seamless reno, he's very impressed (and with him that is a HUGE compliment!).

Also, I understand exactly what you mean about the McMansion comment. I've never heard it said 'in a nice way' and don't blame you for being insulted. I'm an American by birth and upbringing-moved here to the UK in 2010. Most Scots are very proud of their homes-'McMansion' is meant (and taken) as a slur here too.

I still think that "McMansion" is the best descriptor for this house. Fake character.

I love your home. I think the transformation is fantastic. I am sure that the added rooms are wonderful with a large family. your designers did an excellent job.

I love this remodel, including the Palladian windows. This house was built in the 70-80's, for goodness sakes. We're not talking about destroying an historical landmark here. Those windows are a classic design created by an Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio in the early 1700's. To me, these windows have far more historical value than a faux farmhouse built approximately 30 years ago. Just saying...

I think your house looks beautiful. I would love to know the exterior color too. I am very sorry for the lack of grace some people showed you. It always amazes me why people would bother wasting their time commenting on a house they could care less about anyway. Shame on them! I wonder if they think their negative comments are important to you or if they just need attention. It's sad either way. I think these are the people that like to go around popping balloons just because they can.
