That's tough. I like to go bold and like you said, just repaint. But. It isn't always so easy to cover a dark color - even if paint is advertised as "one coat". Good luck with what you decide.

if you are thinking of painting it that dark grey/blue...
I actually did that and even with the natural light ( from the northeast), it was too dark and fairly depressing, even with lighter carpet. It lasted about a year before I couldn't take it anymore.

I went with more of a medium to light color and accented with the dark/bold colors in the decor and an accent wall.

I love it. We have painted our master Benjamin Moore Middlebury Brown. This is our third home and each time we go back to this color. It’s so warm and cocoon like. We tried another color in our previous home and after 6 months went back to Middlebury Brown.

We painted our bedroom a dark purple, almost black (Benjamin Moore Galaxy). Its so dark that most of the time it seems black, except when lots of natural light hits it. We love it, but in our favor the room is fairly large with a lot of natural and artificial light (8 high hats, 2 lamps, and a chandelier + 2 walls of windows and 2 skylights). We left the ceiling and trim a bright white -- which some have said looks jarring, so we may wind up with more silvery tones, but it does help lighten things up.

We were very nervous when we decided to try it and see, and it went from me painting a 2ftx2ft test square, to most of a wall, and finally pulling the trigger. We still need to do some work replacing carpets, etc ... but we love it.

Go for it and paint the entire room. I painted our sunroom Inchyra blue and my only regret was not painting the ceiling and trim the same deep beautiful color. The US is still pretty stuck in the “paint it grey” mode but I love that the UK has embraced the dark side! Right now I’m painting our kitchen Studio Green.

It looks chilly to me. Many years ago color specialist for a paint company told me that the most romantic color for a bedroom is purple. If you want a deep saturated color, think about purple.

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful and is pushing me more towards painting it dark. Interesting to see that people are of both opinions, so it seems that it’s not a definite yes or no.

Also I guess ‘accent’ wall is a British thing then? Haha statement wall?

paint it dark but stay with white trim, I like the contrast. I used to paint everything premixed standard off whites, afraid of having a color mixed that I didn't like and wasting the money. my first venture was a gray mixed to match a couch I had. 1993 before the current trend) painting it was over a yellow that my then new husband had in his house. the yellow made the gray look purple until the very last of it was covered. I really thought I'd made a mistake but when it was all done it was perfect. now I can't stand the lack of color on walls. I've had colors mixed since then. the only mistake I really had was trying to get a 1930s green bathroom look. it came out fluorescent but because I made that choice I lived with it a few years before trying it again with what I thought was a muted shade of green trying for the 1930s green again. better but still bad. lesson learned stay away from green in a bathroom.

Theres a designer here that painted his home a dark wrought iron/steel color with white/cream painted hardwoods.

I vote for "follow your bliss" - why not get yourself some color that makes you happy. The warm color of your furnishings are what would keep it from being dreary or cold - as in the sample pic there are reds and golds in addition to the blues (which btw is classic color combo - primary color triad).

I wouldn't do it, it's a bedroom and to me would feel like a coffin. But if you love dark it could be fashionable. Main reason for my post, I want to say that window is so beautiful!

One thing about really dramatic decors is that you tend to get tired of them more quickly. Years ago, I hung a wallpaper on the bedroom headboard wall which consisted of white tree branches on a dark brown background. I painted the ceiling and remaining walls a matching brown. there was a white carpet in the room and white shadow box frames around the white windows with white blinds in them. It was striking! It lasted about 2 years until I got tired of it and redecorated!

One thing you can say for sure about any bedroom decor - they all look the same when you are sleeping!!! :)

Yup I did! I’m still so pleased with it a few years on. I’ve completely caught the ‘paint it dark bug’ and have gone the same way in my dining room. I’ve also managed to break the ‘ceilings must be white’ barrier which is amazing!

Looks good. I also have a dark grey master bedroom. I also have black out shades. I like sleeping in the dark. :D
