Brass Coming Back?

I just moved into a townhome built in the early 90's. All the interior doors have brass knobs & hinges. One is broken, bedroom door, and must be replaced. Obviously, I want everything to match. Do I start a big project, or just stick with the brass, and hope it becomes fashionable again. If I replace, what finish? Nickel? Bronze? Or something else?

The only brass that goes out of style is cheap lacquered consumer brass. Step onto a yacht made in the 1920's and you'd see that brass definitely doesn't ever go out of style.

I put a soft black handle on all my interior doors and hinges. I love them and not ever changing them.

First of what is the overall style of decor. I would change then to either satin chrome or stainless steel.

The overall style is builder grade early 90's townhome. So, blank slate. Stainless steel appliances in the kitchen are staying. Natural finish oak floors downstairs.

If you want a temporary fix while you consider options, try swapping the broken bedroom knob for a knob from a less-used door.

If you can find hinges whose screw holes line up exactly with the 1990's originals in your new finish, great. If not, will the brass hinges bug you every day or will you be able to ignore them? Sometimes they can be spray painted.

I think brushed nickel would be really nice. It does not show smudges and fingerprints as much and is a very nice.

Hold off n swapping all the hardware... there are hinges and stoppers involved too.... $$$$$$. I’d rather tackle more impactful projects first. Agree with swapping high traffic for low traffic knobs.

We replaced all the swing door hardware with bright brass, and all the pocket door hardware with black. We have brass bowls and vases, both bright and matte finishes, and the bright brass looks beautiful. Our entry door is painted black, and the brass hardware looks amazing! Go with what you love.

Yes, but certainly not those cheap shiny pieces- open AD - it is full of ads for beautiful new products- specially the satin brass looks great!

Spray paint them of the color bothers you so much. You will be surprised how much a little can of spray paint can do. They have nickel finish, chrome etc.

HI -- What you have now is cheap quality and I highly recommend you change it all at once . Stainless steel is the most popular . The new hinges do not need to match the new door knobs . You could have stainless hinges and bronze or black door handles etc.

Buying all new hardware adds up really fast! If your space requires numerous updates, I'd replace the one broken handle with a new one that works/matches even if the style isn't ideal. Then, I'd focus my funds where you would get a bigger impact for your investment. (fresh coat of paint on everything does wonders for a small investment when painting yourself....as one example)
