well thanks, but i can't believe none of us remember her. she has been on pbs for 30 years. the only true sewing show ever.

Having, you are so nice and caring to remember her. I do not know her but grieve the loss of someone who shared her talents with so many.

I just feel that she may not be as popular as others on pbs. but she had a large following, she continued to make shows til the very end, she overcame what i am sure was a lotta negative input to even get on tv, but she did all this and no national recognition at all? she deserved something i think. sorry for ranting.

Whereas I was not a regular viewer of her program I often stopped and watch when I happened upon it. She had such a kind voice that you couldn’t help pausing.

Havingfun, thanks for posting this sad, sad news. I had not heard. I watched Nancy's shows for decades and enjoyed them and her. She was must-see TV on Saturday mornings for me. I no longer have time to sew, but still enjoyed her shows showing me what I could be doing!

Jinny, thanks for the link to Nancy's goodbye. Nancy handled her personal adversity with the same grace she displayed on her shows.

My condolences to her family and friends.

thank you so much, i knew they were out there! please spread the word, she deserves a national announcement In so many ways regarding overcoming adversity and dealing with cancer, she should be held up as a national hero, not to mention her dedication to pbs and the sewing community, I am hoping this gets somewhere through social media. you can even copy my words and not give me credit. It must be so sad for those closest to her for nothing to come of her death.

i guess it is alll we will get and it is great on its own accord. I just would have liked for cancer society to make a big deal or those who speak for the different looking or Good Morning America to include her. She seems like she would many peoples hero. But we will remember her, hope it is enough.

Well I'm a late comer to this thread; hadn't seen the NYTimes obit. Very nice to see. I was reading about a particular quilt of hers when I learned she had died. It's a charity quilt she designed called Quilt to Give.

I'm finishing the bindings after a fellow quilt quilt member donated her wondrous long arm quilting skills. I posted it as a recent thread & wish to publicize the effort & her design. I'm trying to spread the word for others to make one themselves as I did, or w/ their own guild as a lovely tribute to her & her many contributions to the sewing/ quilting communities.

There are probably lots of us who do care, but word of something like this sometimes travels slowly. I just found out about her death today (1/29) because I was googling a show my neighbor told me about! Nancy was always a favorite of mine, and I learned so much from her. She will be missed, but I'm glad she's whole again.

Others will comment after me I hope but this is to say thanks to HavingFun for posting her surprise back in 2017 that National Treasure Nancy Zieman could pass away from cancer in 2017 but receive little national recognition. I'd stopped home decor and wardrobe sewing after my husband died in 1999, the children were adults long on their own so moved on my own to live in Scotland where I slowly renovated an ancient (compared to typical USA homes) until returning to USA during my own cancer experience. I missed notice of her death until today 8 Feb, 2024. I haven't even been involved in sewing for two decades yet I am brokenhearted to know she is gone. Devastated may best describe my sense of loss!

I am about to start home sewing again. Parkinsons and body-wide arthritis makes paper crafts (scrapbooking and card making) too hard because the fiddly hand work calls for better fine motor skills than is possible now. Hopefully simple garments and simplified quilts with appliqués, machine embroidering and decorative machine stitching instead of piecework will be possible and just as fun for me.

With this hobby return in mind I went looking for Nancy Zieman today. But I couldn't find any current NZ videos. I also wanted to order a current Nancy's Notions catalog and determine whether she still sold extra wide fabric as she did years ago. Her website was labeled permanently closed ! I figured she retired but expected her fabulously successful store would still be in operation by someone. Nada! Further Googling took me to this thread on Houzz to find she'd died at 64 in 2017. I cried for the loss of her.

My old Pfaff 7570 Nancy Zieman 20th Anniversary sewing machine will mean more to me now than ever. Many if not most of my Nancy Zieman sewing books are still with me even though I haven't sewed for years. Their reference value just too precious to surrender. Nancy wasn't my first sewing instructor. Nancy was, without question, the kindest, classiest, most diversely talented, practical, patient and best instructor I've ever experienced.

I'm gutted to lose her but was inspired by reading the note she sent her followers, fans and colleagues. Her faith was strong. Though it seemed she died too young she is with the Lord in glory, peace and rest.

I'm grateful to HavingFun for beginning this thread and for honoring Nancy Zieman by questioning why this world renown fabric, thread and machine artist and teacher could pass with so little public recognition.

I just found this thread. Thank you for bringing attention to Nancy Zieman and her death. I was not a regular viewer of her show since I’m not a sewer or a crafty person, but I always enjoyed watching her show whenever I was able to catch it. She was talented and seemed to be a warm, likeable person. I was sadden to learn of Nancy’s quiet, but courageous fight with cancer and eventual death. The world is deprived with her death, for I felt that Nancy had more to give and teach us. This thread is a wonderful tribute to Nancy & allows others to add their own words to honor her. Thank you Nancy Zieman for sharing your knowledge and skills with us! Also thank you to HavingFun for thoughtfully starting this tribute thread!!
