Great idea! I was thinking painting over it. No way could you get just that piece out and have something salvageable when done. You could re-do the entire back splash and start over if you really want to get rid of the Tuscan. What is written on the hood? I have never seen that application before. Is that just black paint over wood cabinetry? I like the contrast.

I believe that a good tile installer could remove the insert. I would advise against trying to cover it, especially since it's above the range.

Do you think matching the sink might be too much? Maybe something complementary but not matching? Formica makes some beautiful countertop material that might work, too. It would be thin and easy to have cut to size and glue in place. Formica patterns

arcy_gw- I have thought of replacing the entire backsplash but I haven't come up with anything I really like better that also works with cabinets. I'm open to ideas though (just not subway tile- not my thing!). The island and hood are painted black and slightly distressed. I do like the contrast too so I have no plans on changing that. The words on the hood are things like "family, gather" it's ok but they will probably get painted over eventually though.

Olychick- You may be right. I do love the copper but now I'm wondering if I should chose something lighter instead of adding more orange/red tones. I'd love to nudge space into a little update. Hmmmmm. Thinking of replacing the island lights with something more lantern-like and airy too. Basically I'd like to give it more of a rustic with feminine touches look instead of rustic/Tuscan.

If you like the framed tile, but just not the image, you can go to aristophanes murals and either pick out an image or have them create one from your own photo...maybe a good tile guy can chip out the offensive tiles to replace with new ones.
