Multifunctional fitness studio - interior layout and design ideas

last modified: 8 years ago

I am in process of equipping a multifunctional fitness studio. This space measures total of 47sqm. I plan to use it as office space (computer desk), functional fitness area, small kitchentte, and lounge area. The office area will also have a workbench that can create dust and dirt (Seen in photo). This space will be used specifically for people with physical disabilities.

I am looking for advice of interior layout, colors, window covering, sound reduction, room dividing, storage, and a way to have a functional and comfortable space.

For my senior interior design project at university, I chose gym design, but that was back in 1988. However, some of what I did is still relevant.

I recommend rubber flooring, to start with. It is easy to put down, and you can even put down removable interlocking rubber tiles, if you do not want them to be permanent. In my own workout room that I did in the 1990s, I had a mirror wall made from 12" square mirror tiles. For sound reduction, you could consider upholstering the walls - something that I used to do back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Or you could hang rugs/tapestries. Using velvet or chenille drapes will also help with sound reduction.

We are in the process of designing a new exercise lab space in a historic textile mill building. that is being completely redeveloped. I am not the architect or designer but we are providing feedback on layout.

I agree with Lars in that I also recommend the rubberized interlocking floor tiles (or you can have hardwood but will be much more expensive) , and you will need mirrors. Can you see the entrance from the desk? I'm not sure if you can do that.

You will need to be able to have some sort of secure storage and locking cabinet or cupboard.

Do you have to consider electrical needs like outlets? Some of our treadmills require a dedicated electrical line, 220V.

I worked out in a small studio that had a combination of light gray on the walls accented with a burnt orange. Do you have a brand, etc. that you associated with for colors? That might play a factor?

You may need to consider facility design standards if you want to follow accessibility standards. I would recommend this American College of Sports Medicine book. You can probably pick up used copy cheap or else download .pdf.

I'm concerned about having a workbench in a gym. If you do anything near the level of sanding, drilling, and work with chemicals that I do, you're putting your exercise equipment at risk from dirt and damage. If you can't put it anywhere else, consider putting it by one of the windows and draping off the space to keep particles away from your rehab area.

I'll throw in a vote for the interlocking rubber or foam tiles. We put these over the concrete slab floor in our basement, when converting it to a multi-purpose workout room:

Easy to install -- we did all the work ourselves. Easy to repair, since you can just pull up a damaged/ripped tile and slap in a new one. Easy to remove once you decide you're not working out as much as you planned to, and want to convert the space :)

hi! it's been 2 years , is your fitness Studio ready? My husband and I have a big house where only the two of us live. And the 3rd floor of the house is empty, so I had the idea to make a personal fitness studio there, with fitness equipment on which my husband and I will train. Especially now during the quarantine , when all the gyms are closed. I recently started using steroids for muscle growth and I am very happy. In addition to muscle growth, I have a lot more energy, which means I can perform more intensive training. By the way I choose steroids here https://sarmguide.com/mk-677-ibutamoren/
