painting cabinets

Looking to brighten up our kitchen. Thinking white where the dark cabinets are now and navy/indigo bar and vent hood? Changing fixtures to tear drop pendants and thinking polished chrome pulls.. room has a ton of natural light during the day. Also thinking to keep the wood trim? Any thoughts?

I agree it’s huge .. flooring will be changed out to a wood look tile and backsplash I’m wanting to change is to an iridescent white .. we bought this house in July and doing some updating the lady must have lied copper bc it’s everywhere even the sink and she loved over the top “Big” pieces.. just trying to do a little at a time starting with painting all the cabinets in the house

Also adding more cabinets bc there is no real pantry here only the cabinet next to fridge .. room is quite bigger then picture shows no real angle to show that ..

Try laying out your white iridescent tile and your wood-look tile on a piece of white paper for some new photos. The new paint color needs to go with both of those items.

Here's a photo that uses a similar mother of pearl tile with fancy white cabinets somewhat like yours in style. Is this the look you are going for?

Yes very similar .. I haven’t decided fully on that as I’m wanting to figure out the cabinet colors first have an idea of what I’m needing to look at for flooring and backsplash
.. looking to go more transitional with some modern look to it

Leaning towards these for island and vent hood .. is it too dark with the almost black granite? And should cabinets both white and colored be a semi gloss? First time doing this and want to make sure I do it right
  • 8 years ago

Looks awfully dark to me especially with the ominous hood lurking over ...

I don't know how much you want to spend on this now, but until you want to do a redo, here's what I would do to make it more cohesive.

Paint the hood to match island.

    Change backsplash.

There is black trim so if you do go white, that'll need to be done.

I highly suggest a Pro to refinish. Red is the hardest color to cover. There's a lot of detail molding and I bet it's going to be costly to re-face.

Unless you love the layout and style, I would do a few things as suggested & put the funds towards a kitchen that is your style.

Artist .. really trying to stay in budget slowly changing a bit at a time .. I dislike the vent hood but without changing out cabinetry above how is that attainable? Wouldn’t any hood be large or have gaps on each side if we changed it to something smaller? The trim is almost a black matches the wood cabinets now and it’s so dark and dreary that’s why I’m wanting to change it .. already 3500 in to paint the cabinets in the whole house bc they are all this dark but had considered leaving the trim around ceiling baseboard and doors .. that was part of the question do I leave it? Doors in the house are a cream color and would be painted white to match cabinets..

Paint the hood the same color as the cabinets to make the kitchen more a cohesive.

Ms.. so in order to add the blue tone .. would I maybe do uppers white and lowers blue?
And there will be cabinetry built next to fridge on the empty wall .. am I better off to go all white uppers and lowers?

You could maybe replace the hood with an inexpensive stainless and do open shelves on both sides to fill in the empty space but keep it open and airy. Your backsplash could go up behind the open shelves. You could sit a couple copper things on the shelves to tie your sink into them. White cabinets upper and lower... navy island would be pretty, but check and see how navy looks near the copper sink. Just an idea.

Angela! Thank you! Will be changing out the sink and copper behind stove as well just not our style ..

    Only the island

Paint the trim white as well as all the cabinets. That is a good price quote as long as they are doing the process properly, cleaning, sanding, prime, sand, and two coats of a good cabinet paint. The navy will look great. You'll see the beautiful color in daylight, nighttime will look very dark, almost black. Remember to layer your light. General, task, ambient.

That is a good price to repaint cabinets. Way less than the refinishing quotes I have heard in our area. Prairiemom61 is correct as long as they are the process she described.

Yes they quoted 500 a day plus supplies about a week to do whole house .. trying to piece it together as we go so it can just be paid out of pocket would love to do it myself but not sure I’ve got the time to do it .. as far as the blue should I paint the entire island or just the front where the teal/turquoise is now?

That is not enough to sand prime and paint the cabinets in a whole house

    How much then?

    In regards to the hood.

Find out if the vent go straight up into ceiling or out side wall? The way it's touching ceiling, my bets are it's covering the hood parts & goes out the ceiling.

Before changing, Look up the manual for the stove to get specifications of clearances needed for the above hood.

Most cabinets have the brands name in side of drawer or somewhere on cabinets, so you can get matching parts, if needed.

You may be able to find an alternative with the previous cabinet supplier.

That red hood has a much shiner paint finish compared to the matte black. It probably has a shellac or high gloss oil paint. Most paints would peel on top of. I have painted many surfaces, not impossible, but a challenge. Discuss in detail with paint pro how they plan on doing it.

Artist they told me they’d be sanding it prior to paint .. the cabinets are custom built .. considering trying to tackle this paint job on my own but I’ve never done it before.. but I do want it done right and last long
  • 8 years ago
Artist do you agree above if I just paint the vent hood white to match cabinets would it lessen the size of it maybe cause it to blend in better rather then drawing attention to it? And do you agree to paint the trim as well? Thinking we should have just rebuilt rather than buying a home in town lol .. the trim isn’t black but because it’s been overcast skies I haven’t been able to show that it’s really just a dark brown

I would paint the hood the same as the cabinets otherwise you’ll just be making the hood more prominent. And definitely have them professionally done by a competent cabinet refinisher... nothing looks worse than a poorly done cabinet paint job. And, as I’ve stated before, repainting kitchen cabinets is a HUGE job, tons of time & effort to do it right.

Thank you K .. I’m in a small town of about 12k so was thinking the prior amount given was the right amount now certainly second guessing because they said that wasn’t enough to do a whole house .. that was prior to a quote for the trim I’m being advised to change .. possibly thinking to leave the trim and see if I like it as we have some dark flooring that will be changed out only because she (the lady who built it) has so many diff styles of flooring and I’d like to change to a wood look tile.

    Cool cat.

Oh that’s awesome I’ve been trying to find an app to do that but haven’t been able to find one easy to use on my phone .. will be easier if we’d get some sun to take some actual daylight pictures.. definitely think the white will brighten it up doing all the interior cabinets white and just painting where the teal is now a blue/indigo.. but I dread the idea of doing all the trim as well

What’s your thoughts? If the cabinets weren’t so dark and on top of that the previous owner didn’t care for them so they are nicked and banged up in places no real shine to them .. so I have to do something

Don’t waste your time or money. Save everything and gut it and start over. You are gonna spend way more than a gut doing things piec meal. And not end up with nearly as good results.

If you're not in love with the kitchen don't put too much love into it.

Spend money into something you choose & will love.

Imo, I would save up & do a whole kitchen remodel.

But if it's not $ feasible yet, to help me deal with it,

I would paint the hood to match, keep the trim on hood same color.

Once that is done, I would re do back splash.

    If it needs more,

then I would do the trim a white. Make sure to buy extra paint for trim for remodel touch ups & match.

I like the all white or pearl in the space. Maybe you can get a good quote on that. If cabinets are showing wear & the layout is not ideal for you personally, I would just wait to get new bright cabinets that fits your style.

I do like the layout without just not the cabinet or backsplash or sink lol or the light fixtures.. ha! Just trying to find a paint color settled on the whites and just wanting a color that will pop on bar .. wanting to keep it sophisticated and transitional designed.. my biggest fear having it right the first time obviously ..
Trying to find a similar layout .. anyone have an idea what I can search for?
Another quick question . Semi gloss for cabinets and trim?
    last modified: 8 years ago

No. Cabinets should be a satin high solids conversion varnish. Not house paint. Unless this is a 15 minute DIY solution. Professionally coating that amount of detail would be in the 9-13K range. There’s a lot of detail sanding needed. Weeks of it in fact in fact, if you are DIYing. Or if you hire a Pro. Either way, it has to be done.

Sophie .. I was told Sherwin Williams had a 2n1 paint only paint supply here .. so painters would sand prime and paint but she (sales at sw) says she can only get the darker paint in a semi gloss.. am I missing something on this varnish?
    last modified: 8 years ago

Yes. It’s Pro only. Sprayed only. It’s what the factory uses. And good local custom cabinet makers. It’s not DIYable. Unless you have an updraft spray booth and HVLP sprayer.

If you’re going to spend money on this rather than gut and replace them all, it should at least be done correctly. That is NOT cheaply done. It will end up costing more than a gut over time. Pretty quickly in fact. With a much worse result.

You will get a much better and bottom line cheaper end result by gutting everything and starting over.

The prices that you have gotten are from TANSTAAFL hacks and you will get hack results. That usually means that you will be forced to replace thm anyway because they will ruin them. Skip that intermediate step and plan the gut now.

With the correct prep, FPE Paints can give stunning results. This stuff isn't normal paint.

For QUALITY results that people aren't used to seeing.....FPE.

Screw SW. I've actually used some FPE paints & primers. Prepped correctly, you can read a newspaper in the reflection of Hollandlac Oils.

Their ECO & Eurolux Series are VERY nice. I mean what I said....the stuff is unreal. Any higher-end Decorator SHOULD at least be aware of this stuff. :-)

C2 has a wonderful Cabinet & Trims paint too. FPE's product-line is much broader tho', and I believe they are licensed to produce all/most of the Pantone colors.
