Data supporting Electrolux preferences

i should be more excited about buying a new washing machine!

Everything I’ve been reading from real people, especially here in the forum, makes me want an Electrolux. But the ratings at consumer reports have my husband very skeptical. He wants an LG which is higher rated. Or a Maytag, and I’ve never really been a Maytag person. I keep hearing that people hate the LG’s (and Samsung’s). Can anyone give me some concrete info about why Electrolux seems to have lower ratings (on Consumer Reports, which I realize could be it’s own thread since people disagree about its value) but still seem to be so highly recommended? Keep in mind consumer reports is only a small piece of what we typically use as a resource, but right now I can’t find much else that’s really a concrete, side by side comparison that includes Electrolux. Or Miele, which my mom is a loyal fan of, but is out of our price range. Especially because washing machine performance is such a huge issue for so many people.

I’m looking for stacking units so I can install cabinets the way I want, and I need the smallest unit with the largest capacity because I have to be able to wash comforters frequently and easily (my son has medical problems and has both reflux and incontinence). I would prefer the shortest cycle time because I often have items from the same accident that need to be washed separately waiting. However, if I never have to wash something twice to get residual urine out, the length of the cycle matters a lot less to me. I would also really love a pre-rinse/wash cycle so I can throw items like underwear in to rinse them out and wash them thoroughly with a full load later.

I never understood why Consumer Reports never give better rating for Electrolux washers and dryers when Reviewed (dot com) gave them rave reviews.

I hear the same thing...Maytag, LG, Samsung are not the consumers favorite brands and seem to have more issues.

People here that have the Electrolux (myself included) like them very much with minimal (or no) issues.

I have the last generation with a Pre-Wash and Allergen cycle, something that Electroux eliminated on this current generation. I hope they bring it back on the next version.

If you can find the older models (60/70 series also called IQTouch and WaveTouch respectfully) you might like the features they offer.

(130 degree Allergen cycle, 152 Sanitize cycle)

The best of luck with whatever brand you go with. Keep us posted.

Consumer Reports must put a lot of weight on the gentleness of the washer. Apparently the Electrolux is pretty rough of clothes. I believe Reviewed said the same thing.

My MIL got the LG WM4370 about 6 weeks ago. I've used it quite a bit and really like it. It's great at cleaning, gentle and fast. It has a feature called Turbowash which has recirculation jets that spray the clothes while it's washing which is cuts down on wash time. My MIL loves her new LG and raves about it all the time.

Thank you for referencing Reviewed.com! I sent my husband some of their reviews of Electrolux. I also read that when Electrolux introduces new products they test their own against LG, so that’s interesting.

I’m a little more open minded about LG after reading their reviews, too. I do like that I could add the pedestal washer to the LG, but it would mean I couldn’t stack my machines, which is the only way I could get both a laundry sink and a cabinet tall enough for a vacuum (we don’t have a linen closet upstairs at all and tripping over it in front of the washing machine is so annoying).

I had an LG set which I gave away after 5 years. It never, ever dried the clothes properly, the washer started to leak & I couldn't get anyone to service it. Seems that LG had issues with all the repair places & they couldn't get parts for them.

I have a small E'lux set now & love it for the most part. I am having an issue with the door latch, which it turns out is a known issue. I have a 3 year parts warranty however, I just discovered it's only covered if I pay a serviceman to come & replace it, which is not covered. So I pay $80 for the part or $85 for the service call.

Otherwise I love it. It cleans my clothes really well, I don't find it hard on clothes at all. I was concerned about getting a non vented condenser dryer but it hasn't been an issue. We have it draining into the washer drain so never have to think about it.

I have mine on the 2nd floor which is what pushed me to E'lux. With the LG, no matter how much reinforcing we did in the floor joists & bought vibration pads etc, the LG moved around during the spin cycle. The E'lux has a 2nd floor guarantee. It hasn't moved in the 1 1/2 that I owned it.

Before you make a decision, make sure you have someone who will service it should you need it. Good luck, it took me a year to figure this out!

Our laundry room is on the 2nd floor, too. In consumer reports LG scored better on vibration, but I’m sure that doesn’t take into account the 2nd floor, and also different wash cycles. I guess vibration isn’t really the same as movement, I just assumed less vibration meant less movement. It’s good to hear your experience with both in real life.

I have heard the same thing about difficulty servicing the LG. It stuck in my mind because I’ve read it so many times online. I also know a lot of that depends on the region, and since my husband always repairs everything himself, we have very little experience with repairs in our area. I do think since we’re upgrading this time to more expensive machines we would probably have them serviced in the future, but my husband hates waiting for other people and is pretty handy, so he’s going to want the machine that’s least likely to require outside repair.

Also a stacked set will cost more to have serviced because if it's a washer issue the dryer has to be removed to service washer. More costly and requires two people.

We always do everything ourselves as well, which was why I called E'lux to get the part, but when all we were going to save was $5, we figured, may as well get the guy here.

The vibration was so bad that we thought the washer was literally going to fall down the hall stairs & it was balanced & level. I really think there may have been something wrong with it, but we had Sears come & look at it when we first bought it, under warranty & they said, nothing wrong with it, that's just how it is.

Lots of people love LG or Samsung, this is just my own experience. I will never buy another LG product. I have a Samsung fridge that I love (7 years now) and a Samsung TV (2years) And I also love my E'lux range (7 years) So I don't envy your decision, I was in your shoes & it's a toughie. I had a Miele in our last house & stupidly left it there. If I could have found the $ in the budget, it would have been my first choice.

@eva - the choices are clearly limited in todays consumer environment. The Electrolux and LG are both good choices. One is made in Mexico, the other in Korea. Where its made isn’t as important as the feature set, repair history, how the units will meet your needs. There are really only 3 players these days, Samsung, Electrolux, and LG. All the rest can be ignored IMO. Whirlpool who makes Maytag used to make really good machines, but its featurel less junk these days. Consumer Reports and Laundry reviewed are subjective reviews, and do not necessarily evolve around fact. Good luck!

Well we decided to go with the Electrolux and found it on sale this morning for New Year. Only another week or so of washing everything twice to get clothes clean with my dying machine!

Once we decided to stay below $1000 per machine so we can budget more for the cabinets in the laundry room, the Electrolux just stood out to me. It just seemed “stronger,” for lack of a more creative word.

There were interesting additional features on the bigger, more expensive LG machine - and I was really tempted by the sidekick TwinWash thing, but both would have eaten up a lot of our laundry room budget. It did get me thinking, and we are going to add W/D hookups in our basement, which will eventually back up to the bathroom down there. We are a family that would frequently use a second inexpensive or older machine. It would be so awesome to be able to throw sheets in one and a comforter in another at the same time after an accident! Although maybe the Electrolux will be able to handle them together. My current machine tangles sheets if they’re washed with anything but sheets.

My one hesitation was that I read Electrolux has new models coming out this year and if they come out really soon I’m going to be disappointed I missed out.

Now I’m off to measure for cabinets! Yay!

I am so happy we chose the Electrolux! Right after we ordered them the temptation to get the little LG pedestal washer haunted me and I second guessed until they arrived. But they’re great!

The 15 minute quick wash really eliminates a lot of what I’d use the pedestal washer for anyway. I already used it to throw in a pair of pants after my son had an accident. I thought it would really just rinse them out so they wouldn’t smell while I waited for a full load, but there was no need to wash them again.

What surprised me the most is how well the fabric softener seems to be working. I don’t use it on all of my loads because my husband doesn’t care for it, just towels and loungewear, but I’ve been a fabric softener fan since I started doing my own laundry in college. My old machine seemed to just dump it in and sometimes I had to rinse it out because it deposited too much in one place and made everything slimy. I’d stopped using it a lot of the time. The Electrolux makes the clothes feel so good, I forgot that’s why I started using fabric softener in the first place! Just a little bit of fabric conditioner, evenly dispersed throughout the load, so little in fact that I can’t even tell it’s there until the clothes come out of the dryer and feel great.

I’ve been catching up on all kinds of laundry my dying machine couldn’t handle and so far so good. Tonight and tomorrow I have a couple of comforters to throw in and some bath mats and I can’t believe I’m looking forward to it! Even with all of the loads I had to do and some of the long wash cycles I finished everything in such a short amount of time because I didn’t have to wash anything twice. I definitely should have bought it six months ago.
