Wah!! It appears a recent and ill planned re do. .......... to as non functional as it may have been at the start of the project. Beginning with a ridiculously located dishwasher on the wrong side of a sink. .......and a pass thru "window" that probably should not be one at all.

If you're prepared to put most or all the cabinetry and counter top in a dumpster........draw the entire room - walls, window, passthru, entry door etc. and add the dimensions for all of those elements.

I would agree that if you are willing to redo cabinetry you could make this space very functional. I don't know what is in the other side of the wall with the opening "window", but if you could remove that wall do an "L" shaped cabinetry in the perimeter and a small island is one idea.

We need a floor plan and IMO the DW goes on either side of the sink so not a big deal, the stove is definately in the wrong place . Some more pics and that detailed floor plan will get more help for you.

I believe they are saying dishwasher is on the wrong side because of it was on the left side the counter/cabinets could have wrapped around the corner making the stove look part of kitchen. Stove isnt in the wrong area just the dishwasher.

Hire someone with a clue You need a KD. And a budget sufficient to actually make changes.

Figure out if the pass thru by fridge will remain...filled in for a complete wall .....or entire wall there removed to open the space. This is your initial decision before plans can be designed....you have options.

Pull the stove away from that combustible cabinet right now please, before you burn down your house.

The aesthetics of the kitchen are fine, the design is terrible. There is no work space along side of the range and, as Joseph Corlett said, safety is a major issue. Can the dishwasher door even be opened in that space? I don’t believe this is a DIY design situation. Run, don’t walk, to a kitchen designer. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I would close in the pass thru with a solid wall. Therefore the cabinet to the right of the stove can move to the wall with the fridge.
Dishwasher moves to left of the sink.
Counter runs from the left side of the sink and around the corner to meet with the stove. Cabinet on right of stove is now gone and you run a counter on the right side to the wall.

Assuming you don't want a full redo of the kitchen and would like to keep the budget down, determine much room you need to open the dishwasher and mark that. Remove the tall cabinet and center the stove on the portion of wall that remains after subtracting the dishwasher "reach", assuming you can do so without moving the ga$ line, which is expensive. Add symmetrical base cabinets on either side of the stove. Move the upper cabinets so they center over the stove and add shelves on either side, to the width of the lower cabs. Alternatively, move the stove as far as possible to the left, once you've figured out the dishwasher "reach." Then relocate upper cabinets wherever they look best, add upper shelves in the remaining space and lower cabs to right of stove.
You're then free to do the refrigerator wall in whatever way works best for you to maximize storage and/or counter space.
It won't be ideal but I'm a big believer in optimal, especially given what kitchens cost.

• Thanks for all the really good suggestions and ideas. I agree that the kitchen is aesthetic (I mean, not too bad) but terribly non-functional. I was thinking on similar lines such as
  - Removing the wall with window and replacing it with an island
• - The stove can stay on the same wall it is currently but move it a couple of inches on either side to keep that in line with whatever cabinets are coming around it
• - The dishwasher placement is wrong, it will be moving closer or to the left of the sink
• - I like Maureen's suggestion on the Refrigerator placement.
  
  Overall, we would like to make these changes before we move in (earlier the better).

Flip the DW location to the other side, close the wall, and reverse the stove and fridge locations. You don't want them side by side - not energy efficient to run an oven next to an appliance designed to keep things cool.
