Looking for some advice for lighting in our new kitchen.

We’re doing a complete renovation of the kitchen and dining room. The plan is to add pot lights along with island pendants and under cabinet lights. We are keeping the existing dining room light.

- 2 pot lights over the sink
- 3 pendants over the island
- 4 sets of undercabinet lights
- 9 pot lights in the kitchen
- 1 fixture over the dining room table
- 4 pot lights in the dining room

The attached diagram is a rough estimate of where the fixtures will be placed.

Thoughts / suggestions for this lighting plan?


The second half of the question is about how to configure the switches for these lights. We’re debating two options:

- hook up all the undercabinets and the island pendants on one switch and put the kitchen pot lights on a second switch. Both switches would be located on the short wall at the bottom right of the kitchen in the diagram. Place the dining room fixture and pot lights on another switch, located at the end of the island

- hook up all the kitchen pot lights and the island pendants on one switch, located on the short wall at the bottom right of the kitchen in the diagram. Hook up the undercabinets on the long run of cabinets (top of diagram) on a separate switch located on the wall near the range / sink. Hook up the undercabinets on the short run of cabinets (bottom of kitchen in the diagram) on a separate switch located on that wall. Dining room fixture and pot lights on another switch, located at the end of the island
