Help me choose a variegated?

I have one more japonica spot and I'd like to add something variegated. La Peppermint, Gov Mouton, Lady Vansittart? What would you choose if you could only have one? I am in 8b Texas.

I would buy two pots so I could get all three! But yes, it should be whatever you like. As a prev owner of an Eleanor McCown, I prefer the pink look of Peppermint and LV.

Peppermint is a late bloomer; may suffer from scale. Sometimes blooms all pink, meaning it may be a little unstable and you get various bloom colors in just one bush. It happened to me with EM. I did not mind that it reverted to its parents in one branch but the dogs had other plans. ;o)) Ha!

Gov Mouton can be very bloom dependable in Zone 8. A late bloomer too, it is also known as 'Aunt Jetty' or 'Angelica.' Has white splotches, rather than streaks of white. Darker red.

Lady Vansittart is a late bloomer. Has more petals. Maybe the oldest...

I like them myself but unfortunately, all of these bloom late. I am trying to get early bloomers as my winters have become warmer and cold spells make these late bloomers stop blooming for weeks/months or suffer from bud drop. I continue looking for early blooming ones similar to EM, Peppermint or LV but, eh, have not found pretty ones among the sasanquas. Pink Snow is the closest.

Good luck and happy New Year needmoremulch.

Luis, have you looked at Stars ’n Stripes? It’s a sasanqua and could be close to what you are after, if pink/white variegation is the desired trait.

I checked it out a long while ago online but had forgotten. Thanks for reminding me.

I ended up getting Lady V and La Peppermint. I think I will put Tricolor Superba and Herme on the list for next year. :)

I saw LV for sale locally at Calloway's in my area.

'Dixie Knight Supreme' might be another choice to consider. Maybe a bit more white than 'Gov Mouton'. Guess it depends on whether you want more red or white.

My LV has buds now but it is anyone's guess when it will bloom. Based on the size of the buds alone, it is not yet time. Of course, the recent cold spells may throw more uncertainty into guessing when the buds may open. Hope your LV and Peppermint do not disappoint!

i have not seen any red and white variegated that i like but here is one that i have growing that was a gift. i put it in the woods and did not tend to it much but it is loaded with buds this year. the name is 'mabel bryan' and i think it just looks a mess but some folk like things that i don't and you might be one of them! *ha*

Nice picture! The messy look may be because the anthers are all over the bloom. But the stripes remind me of my Lady Vansittart (sp?): no blooms yet but I have one flower bud that is fixing to "explode" at any time.
