Dahlia winter update

I just went and checked on my dahlias after reading some dahlia storage information from here this morning. It’s a good thing I did. I stored each tuber, coated in sulphur powder, in paper bags surrounded by peat moss. When I brought them down to the basement in one big plastic bucket I left them there, piled on top of each other. Bad mistake. The bottom bag with my favorite dahlia was covered in small green spots (mold) and damp. Inside still looked okay so I only swapped out the paper bag. The other bags and tubers inside appeared okay. They are all now sitting on a shelf. I experimented wrapping a small tuber loosely in newspaper and then loosely in a plastic bag. Total mold and rot. I’m hoping the peat moss & bag technique works for me. I’m new at storing them. Thanks for the helpful advice and tips!

Tuber storage can be a painful learning curve, that's for sure. Glad you caught the mold in time.

Thank you. I'm hoping this way works for me. If not, I'll try something different next year. Keeping fingers crossed!

Thank you for the reminder. I'm going to check on mine today. I've been putting it off afraid of what I'll find.

This is only my second year storing and last year I only had 2 varieties that I didn't care that much about.

This year I have 20 varieties that I am trying to save and some are ones I love that are hard to find.

How did you make out Pink? My experience is the same as yours. Didn’t care so much about the few I tried saving last year. This year I’m more invested. I think I’ll go check mine again also!

I'm going to look tomorrow....I swear.lol. When I got back from grocery shopping today I was all ready to go tackle the dahlias and then I had a cup of tea and got lazy.

Easy to do! I peaked at a bunch of mine yesterday and they still felt good through the peat moss. I’m hopeful this way might work for me. Still several months to go,,,,,

"... and then I had a cup of tea..."

*grinning sheepishly* Yup, that is easy to do. This hobby tends to be pretty work intensive, which is tough sometimes after a full day. Not that peeking is difficult; it's the necessity to correct the situation if storage is lacking that tires us out even while thinking about it.

This reminded me to check on my own! Very glad you caught the mold in time and hope you’re able to save the rest. I dried mine out and stored them in a long narrow pot and covered in peat moss. Made sure they were spaced far away from each other. I also covered half the pot with foil to help keep a little warmth as they’re currently in an unsheathed garage inside a cabinet :)

Just checked on my dahlias and gladiolus I had stored. They look great! Dry, but still plump and with a little bit of “give” when gently squeezed. I was worried the cabinet was too cold for them and that they’d shrivel up but they look really good! Let’s just hope they stay alive and bloom next year, as I was accidentally too rough taking them out of the ground when frosts were hitting

Sounds encouraging Kali !! Glad to hear.

Wow All! I am now scared! I will have to go check on mine tmr. I will be heartbroken if I lose any. A dear friend gave me the Dahlias and they are very very old. I was delighted to see that most every tuber grew and bloomed! I was so excited. Where I live I just use to pick up the annual pots at the nursery. My Dad grew Dahlias but I was never into until my friend found these old tubers and planted them in her yard. Thanks all and please say a prayer that I find mine in good condition. I had my great-nephew dig them up for me and store them. I didn't check to see just how! UGH!

Wishing you luck avo! Let us know how it turns out :)

I went and checked mine that I wrapped loosely in newspaper in a paper bag stashed in the coldest cabinet of a cottage kept at 50.. They look like they're starting to shrivel! Should I mist them? Put them in buckets of soil? Peat moss? Help!

Oh No kitasei! Can’t guarantee my advice but — try super lightly misting them and put them in peat moss. It’s what I would do if it were me.

    **editing for crazing spelling lol

Hi Friends! Thank you so much - I am so glad I came on. I haven't been on GW in a very long time! Glad I didn't sit drooling over the Dahlia pics and read this post. All is well. My great-nephew had them in a brown bad on top of a shelf in the basement - no mold. They look a lot like when they were given to me. Thank You! :)

That’s great to hear Avo. Do any of you start them early in pots? If so, when? I’m in Portland Maine, zone 5. My last frost date is around May 15th but doesn’t really stabilize in temps until first of June. Last Memorial Day it was in the low 40’s ...burr

Mainegirl - I’m looking for the same info. I’m in zone 5/6, this will be the first time I’ve over wintered dahlias. Last season was my first time growing them and I started super late. I’ll be anxious to start early this time :)

I only start early if Im planing to propagate by cuttings, not convinced it gives that much of a jump start in flowering. I'm 6a

    Thank you for your input!

Hi Rachel (mainegirl04103), I live in Portland, too, and have, I'm guessing, 35 varieties of dahlias. Maybe we should connect? I've been storing dahlias for over 20 years. Many of mine came from Swan Island Dahlias. I'd be happy to swap tubers, too.

I'd love to connect with someone nearby and learn more about dahlias! I'm not tech savvy so is there a way to reach out to you privately? How exciting and just in time for the new season (if it ever comes ...sigh ...)

Yeah, I don't see a way to connect privately either. This site is not like Facebook.

Thank you... not very smart on this kind of stuff

As for the dahlias, 300?? WOW! I'm so hoping I have viable tubers this year!
