Green will enhance the color of the cherry not tone it down.

Neutral that goes with the other elements in the room works best. It looks on my screen like your walls have slight green hue? Try a more true neutral but one that goes with the other elements in your room. If you do go gray it needs to be a warm greige.

Here is a similar kitchen. Looks like they used a light grey beige.

By using a dark bold complimentary color (e.g., green) it will tone the cherry down by drawing your eye to the dark green, and away from the cherry - as right now the cherry is the darkest color in the room.

To tone the cherry down, imho, you need to add a stronger element.

Green and red are the most complimentary colors so no the green will not tone down the red. Keep the walls a simple greige that gives a good background for all your colorful things and they will help take your eye away rom all the red.

What did you end up going with? I just purchased a house with cherry cabinets too. I am trying to work with them instead of replacing them. I will be changing the countertop to a light neutral shade, and I just painted the kitchen Repose Gray. That really helped already.
