Hi Avia......waving from Florida. Do you give a book that the quilt relates to with it? As Fran said, very clever! Have you thought about how you'll do this one? Madeline (so expressive) in center of quilt with objects relating to various adventures in blocks randomly surrounding her? However you proceed, show pictures as you go along please. It will be fun to watch your progress.

Hi Sharon! thank you so much! Yes, I give the book along with the quilt. My first was from Tommy DePaola's Quilt Story, but I can't seem to locate a photo of it- I'll have to ask my sister to take one. I especially love finding a book that has childhood memories or special meaning to the Mama to be. Ive started some sketches and ideas for this one- the artwork is so beautiful I'd love to capture the felling of it.

Your title threw me for a minute...I thought of quilt from the cloth story books . I just finished a top where I cut the pages from the panel and framed them into the quilt. Had picked up the panel at a thrift store for 50 cents...not quilted yet but right cute. Child can read the blocks and follow the story. I even used the 'cover' pages at start and end, added 2 more appliqued blocks to get my size. It was fun to do. very cloudy when pix taken--afraid you can't read the story!

Those are cute! My guild did this as a challenge a few years ago - buy a book for a child and make a quilt to go with it. They went to the local Children's Home.

I have a plan! Here is the book cover:

I love the colors and the movement and I don't want to try to literally recreate the image, so I think I'm going to do a diagonal striped pattern with these three fabrics in 2 inch widths, randomly placed.

And then I'll back it with this:

I'm still deciding, but I think I'll embroider an Eiffel Tower after it's pieced together. I don't want it to be too busy, so I'll make the final decision when I can see it all together. I'm excited to get started!

Love the fabrics you’ve chosen! It’s not as hard as you might thing to design a figure to put on a quilt. The hard part is the face, but you could do the back of the little girl figure looking up at the Eiffel Tower and have her hat block her face - like the Sunbonnet Sue character. You could even have her seen from the side and still have her big hat cover her face. You might want to be sure the cape on her coat is in the image. I did this when making a “Goin’ Fishing” wall quilt for a friend - there was a little person sitting on the bank of the river with a fishing pole in her hand and a big sun hat hiding her face - the fisherman/woman was my friend in the landscape-style wall quilt. It worked well.

As long as you have Madeline in the right clothes, hat, shoes, it won’t matter that what is seen is the back of her. You could try tracing the figure of her from the book if you don’t care for your sketching skills, then increase the size on a copier if needed.

The too is all pieced! I changed my original idea of a bed sized quilt to a lap quilt- I’m not sure the colors and themes I’ve chose will be something she wants as her room decor as she gets older. I want her to be able to love on it for a long time, so I figured smaller was more versatile. I’m very pleased with the look so far, now to sketch out an Eiffel Tower and get my embroidery on!

I love this idea!!!! And I love batik's so I look forward to seeing Madeline's quilt. That was one of my favorite books when I was younger.

I am interested in your penny for good luck. I'm quilting a baby quilt right now and would love to add a penny, but not sure how you do that where it can't be removed, but still seen?

Thanks lafonda! I sew the penny inside the quilt so you can’t see it; I stitch a little heart or something that relates to the quilt around the penny so you can see where it is. When I was a child I would hold my blankie by the corner with the penny in it so it’s a very special tradition for me.

I have finished Madeline! I did not get the embroidery finished in March as I had hoped, but my friends planned a visit in May, so I kicked it up the last few weeks and it’s all finished

I’m mostly pleased with it- my technical quilting and embroidery skills aren’t top level, so there are mistakes and messy spots that I wish I had been able to do better, but overall I think it captures the colors and the movement and the whimsy of the original artwork and it was made with lots and lots of love. I did quilt it, instead of tying it. And I had to switch out my backing fabric because my original pick was out of stock.
