I think it would be better if you attached these as a comment to your original post with your question

Since I am here, this is the design I try never to do unless they are only doing a standard 4" or 6" backsplash. Your electrician seems to have misread the plans. The outlet on the edge of the counter really causes a head scratcher as it looks like it would be half on and half off a full tile type splash.
Would you go one tile throughout or have accent tiles? maybe that could be a way to step back the tile? still thinking.

the counter seem to be 'absolute balck' or 'andes' find the 12 x 12 tile to match and use them on a 45 degree around as a back splash....cant do better than that
  • 13 years ago
ok, that outlet was put in for direct tv which we don't have so it can be easliy taken out -- my thoughts are to stop the tile at the cabinet -- I think the white subway tile will have too much contrast and look odd
  • 13 years ago
Another thought would be to run the tile past the outlet and take it floor to ceiling.

    Leaving the trim in place.
Too bad they don't make end tiles you could create a scroll from counter to cabinet.

keep it simple ......it is only a back splash nothing that need much attention drawn to it.....go with the granite 12 x 12

Black, I would stay under the cabinets for sure. White, I'm kind of leaning toward going long. Really on the fence.

but then the question IS why white!!!!
Long would make the outlet disappear.

I'm always amazed that the back splash is the one thing that isnt planned.... when the kitchen is installed then it seems is the time to plan the back splash........

the back splash should be the counter top color .....thats $175.00 her hour opinion

I have a similar layout with my kitchen. We angled the backsplash and it works well for us. Attached a pic.

I'd still use the counter top material
I agree Gary, we should have matched the countertop.

Then I guess Elaine should make $200 per hour. LOL because its her kitchen. Normally I would say that the backsplash should be the same material as top, but I think it would be too dark in this one instance. Just don't tell anyone else I said that.

Margaret, do you have time for lunch this week?

If it doesn't show then why would it matter if it was white?

This may be one of those rare instances where a 4" granite backsplash would go to the end of the counter, and then white tile above and only under the cabinet. We could both win! Lol

wow, just joined houzz and so many comments and suggestions, thanks everyone. When we moved into the house there was no backplash, so we are finally getting around to it. The granite has some flecks of light and dark gray (can't see it in my photo) -- anyway, going with white b/c that section of the kitchen has NO natural light and it gets very dark. So while I see your point about matching it Gary, I want to brighten it up at bit. In my next kitchen which hopefully won't be too far down the road -- it will match and things will be different, but alas I have to work with what I have and I'm not replacing the countertops. Keeping it under the cabinets, simple yes, but I like clean lines and linear. Signing off now!

From my perspective the white and black theme has always been a favorite for kitchens, but I think the white cabinets with the white black splash is bland. If I would have gone with a backsplash matching the counter I think it would have been more a better choice.

The paint color is Ben Moore -- Woodlawn Blue -- I love it!

I think a gray marble subway tile would look great. It is timeless and would tie in the dark counter. I would also use an edge tile along the cabinet line to the counter. Good luck

careful of using great material, not all materials are the best solution for different situations. It's challenging at times to select a 'second most favorite' as it it the best for the job

Is there a reason not to use a two-tone backsplash? Maybe grey and white, black and white? Or tri-tone black, white, grey? Just to break up all that white? It would still shimmer with light, but I think Gary has a point about the black backsplash. Also, I would keep the line straight between down from the cabinet. The bar supports have a curly shape to them, that would conflict if you brought it down on an angle. Maybe it's just personal taste, but I prefer clean lines. My opinion, though, is more in the penny-for-your-thoughts range ;)

Perhaps some photos would help. I love gray, white, or marble for the backsplash with your black granite, and I think continuing the black is too dark an effect, but it's what you like that counts:

Our pearl or diamond subway tile would look great. You can see it here- http://www.granitetransformations.com/southjersey/products/mosaic-tiles/colors/subway/

    Good luck!

I like feeny's suggestions. All very nice but since your wall color is blue, i'd say go for something on the blue side too like carrera
