After looking at photos of "windows over bookcase", the typical treatments are none at all, roman shades, plantation shutters, bamboo blinds, or a curtain rod hung in front of the bookcase with full length drapery panels in front of a window seat. Please don't make half length draperies though, as they will cover too much window and look awkward.

How about shutters

They are lovely windows, so I would keep them uncluttered if you don't need either privacy or protection from glare. But if you do, I would use cordless honeycomb blinds for privacy, either inset mounted or mounted on the top molding. Or if glare is the only problem I would mount solar shades (again, either inset or from the top).

We will position the bed looking straight out these windows. It's a beautiful view from the second story looking into the woods. I want to be able to block out the light at night time and during the early morning hours. I would like to have functional drapes that also frame the large windows and soften it up, yet that is proving more difficult with the stack back from the fabric. The window and the roof lines are also complicating the matter. The set up in the picture is from the previous owners--- we won't have the plants.

How wide is the window? About 108"? If so, traditional pleated curtains would stack about 12-15" each side. You could also consider ripple fold curtains, which would stack even less. Ripplefold would be better as you have limited mounting space--ceiling mount your hardware for either.

If they were mine I would install up down/down up blinds. That way you can have the privacy yet allow sunshine YOU want in. I have these in my living room and have for years and LOVE them. They help with the heat and the cold. Available at Lowes and Home Depot.

Double cordless honeycomb blinds are the best of both worlds! When down, block for privacy and heat/cold. When up, practically disappear. I had them installed 4 years ago and have been very happy with them!
