Plenty of room. I would change the rug & the lighting is terrible, but if the rug stays, here's what you could do.

That is a beautiful space and staircase! Do you like traditional? Appears the architecture would go well with that kind of style. I would first off change the light to something a little more dramatic. For inspiration, take a look at the homes showcased in the Savanah and Charleston regions on Pinterest. When you find what you like, you can begin to put the elements together, including a color palette and functionality of the space. Look forward to your ideas!

I might select a rug without a border

Or a rug with a border, but in a color that will reflect more light.

Wow, that is a big space. I would upgrade the area rug and chandelier. And then I would do a design whereby the furniture is in the center of the space (instead of against the wall where you have that little table now). I would see if I couldn't get a round table and 2 chairs to fit on top of that rug. I would put a bench underneath that window along the back wall and remove that little piece of furniture you currently have back there.

I like the secretary desk [is it?]... place a striking Tiffany-style lamp.... something.

Unless you want a tall plant...?

Love this chair, that's all - if you like these gem colors / plum-raisin... so nice.

Maybe a bench as below across from the doors.
