Wood flooring color dilemma

My new home currently has wood floor covering entire house - both stories. I would like second story with hallway to be dark colored, while first story to be maple or white colored. However, I have wood flooring stairs. How do I make the transition look seemless, natural and nice?

Congrats on your new home.

I assume the lower level is your "entry" level? ... with kitchen, dining, etc? Then make the floors match the entry level.

... and a word of warning for you: everyone that I know that has done a dark stain on their hardwood regrets it because of the maintenence. personally, I would pick one stain and go with it in the entire house.

Why do you want two different stains for each floor?? NO, no...keep it the same shade!!
