Knotty Pine overload

My husband and I have purchased this 1909 cabin, and while we love the quirky charm, we are wanting to give it more

of a mid-century/Scandinavian or minimalist 1970s chalet feel. We’re installing a more modern gas stove to replace the current, totally unsafe woodstove. We would love to keep *some* of the knotty pine, but are overwhelmed. What would you do to bring this room slightly more up to date?

You have options!

A starting point could be to switch out the stair railing along the tread and what looks to be an upper level hallway or shallow loft to a wrought iron or cable railing. That will certainly help to break up the rustic warmth and texture of the knotty pine. See how that feels to you and decided from there how much more of the wood you'd like to disguise or discard. Painting or white-washing a wall or two -as in many of the conceptual photographs presented above- would be another great way to update and domesticate the space. Keep in mind furnishings and accessories will go a long way to contrast all of the existing wood so start small with your updates before de-pining too much.

Truly beautiful room. Once it is furnished, it likely will not seem like overload.

To help with that, as you furnish and add art to the room, make a deliberate choice as to what/where you want to be the focal point of the room and put some bright or bold color there.

I love what you’re envisioning! If you’re wanting to go more scandinavian/modern, you could paint it all white. If you want to keep some of the knotty pine, perhaps leave just the ceiling natural. Consider introducing some fun ceramic tiles for wood stove (Heath Ceramics has a “hex twist” and I beleive if you look at their website, they have a fireplace category where you can see some examples. Love the stove you selected. Maybe replace the front door with something more modern/unique.

paint the walls white (seal those knots first!) and leave the ceiling and railing as is.

here's one that isn't, but it has a lot of light and the tone is also lighter

Here is the picture I remember seeing. I used this tile ina different color on my bathroom and it’s beautiful. In this picture, they used 3 different colors of the hex twist. They have some really beautiful tile designs.

I agree with leaving just the ceiling for the look you want and those tiles are interesting.

How gorgeous - that's going to be a fun project! I agree - painting most of it but leaving plenty of the original pine for accent would make it feel airy but still maintain the cabin-feel. If it were me I definitely would NOT paint all of it.

i adore Beth's first two photos. i feel like i could breathe in there. also, you could remove the carpet then and have wood floors which are very nice.

your own photo makes me want to RUN AWAY! ha.... i'd never buy the house as i'd be afraid my husband would renege on the 'we can paint some of it' promise after closing.

I agree with keeping the ceiling but I would do a white wash on the walls.

You have / had a water intrusion problem, look at the area along the floor / under the windows to the right of the door. Also check where the wall meets the ceiling over those windows.

Yes, thank you for pointing that out! The roof was replaced after the water damage so there are no longer any leaks but the previous owner never bothered replacing the damaged panels. Also another reason for wanting to paint some of the walls!
