It would be wonderful if you could hang the TV on the wall, perhaps just 9 to 12" higher than console. Is that possible? But before you hang the TV, try moving the console away from the fireplace by about a foot. Actually it would be nice to center it on the wall, removing the small table or stool the is at the left end of the console. Also please remove the dog.

To the right of the console, try simplifying the items that are on the shelves. Perhaps you have some large items you could put on the shelves, such as the dog. Put fewer items on each shelf, mixing in some books that are stacked horizontally.

You could also eliminate the items that are on the hearth. We designers are seeing a much cleaner look these days.

If you can't hang the TV, then I like your idea of a round item placed above the TV, but then you'd have to remove the round piece that is on the FP since you can't use two round items.

I'm hoping the TV can be hung on the wall so that she doesn't need to put anything above the TV because the answer that acm gave was really my first thought.

That TV is already more than high enough and hanging it 9" higher won't in any way make that blank space any less blank. My first thought was to do just one shelf at the height of the mantel over the TV. It would not need to be very deep and should not extend further than the console, which I agree should have a little bit of breathing room from the stone fireplace.

Thanks everyone so far for the great ideas! The TV can't be hung on the wall - the top is at 5' now, just right (plus, you'd see the cords if it were hung). The shelves on the right of the fireplace are only 3" deep, so large items (even books laid horizontally) would be challenging. I removed the dog (good suggestion) and like the idea of a shelf above the TV. Keep the good ideas coming!

Sorry, can't help with the wall behind the TV, but I love the decoration on your fireplace. Do you remember where you purchased it?

If those shelves to the right of the FP are only 3" deep, you could consider removing them. They are no doubt meant for family photos, and while I really enjoy family photos, I like to see them in areas such as the powder room, where you have a captive audience looking at them, or a hallway to the bedrooms.

I agree that the FP wall could stand on its own without the large round branch art piece. Simple is better, though it is a nice piece that could go elsewhere.

@functionthenlook -- we purchased it in Fort Worth, but the store said the person that made it (in Costa Rica) was no longer making them :(

Nothing above the T.V and IMO those shelves should be removed they just add distraction from the nice fireplace and create too much asymmetry on that wall and way too many tiny things on them too
