It's a nice, deep yellow. I hope it will be available before too long. I'm sure hybridizers will create some incredible crosses to give us more yellow and orange flowers someday. Thanks for posting. Do you know how hardy it is?

I was just looking up its information on some Chinese sites. Man this camellia is really stunning! Apparently it is ever blooming, just like C. Azalea. The Baidu post I found said it can bloom for 300 days in a year but is not cold hardy at all. Its native habitat in the Guangxi province has an annual low temperature of -3 °C, that is about 27 °F. Here in the North America, it will need to live in a pot.

Also, apparently many Chinese shopping sites (shipping only within China, of course) carry this plant. If it is this easy to propagate and popular, it might not be long before we see them more commonly available here.

The real interest in this species would be for creating hybrids... like this one:

All kidding aside, thanks for posting. A remarkable looking plant for those who can grow it. I'm all for hybrids but in this case, the parent is pretty darn good!

You are right. SoCal and Florida are likely the only places here where C. Chuangtsoensis and other species with yellow flowers, like C. Nitidissima, can be planted in the ground. :)

I think C. Nitidissima can handle down to zone 8b (on the West coast, it might only be 9 on the East coast, because of the increasing frequency of freak low temperature events)

that may or may not be true...if you'd lived in the mid 1930s, you might have thought "we're having an increasing frequency of freak low temperature events". Same thing for the early 1960s, and the legendary period from about 77 to 85. 94 and 96 were bad too. The climate of most of the CONUS has had periods of 'freak low temperature events'.
