KD overhead view The brown edges show it could use some more water from the soaker hose. Only one pass now, but I want to do a double circle around this and its neighbor, Empress Wu. Giants need their water!

nichols, will do, hopefully it will be a better growing season than the last two. Too many lengthy dry spells at the worst times for hostas. I took very few pics last year because so many looked horrible from hot, dry, spring conditions.

I have no Ks. That white strip on kiwi full monty is so cool. I want to thank ilovetogrow for doing this. The other garden forums are mostly dormant this time of year. Thank goodness for this series as it keeps my garden love alive. And thanks for the lizard spock reference. Sweet!

mbug..good idea to put Kempen Red Twist in a pot..you can appreciate ALL of it..can see the red stems..

Komodo Dragon is a well named beast. No photo, this year will be it's 3rd season here. Can't wait to see what size it gets to.

Yes, Old Dirt- how do you handle the really large KD in the whiskey barrel? Does it overwinter in place? I have a barrel too that I might put a hosta in.

• windymess & nicholsworth, This the first year in the barrel. I transplanted it there early spring. I am just going to leave it in place and hope for the best. I did dump as much chopped leaves on top of it as it would hold. I am more concerned with the 5-1-1 growing media as it decomposes and should be replaced.

old dirt..that pot IS too heavy to move..it seems to be generating heat..the snow is melting by the bottom of it..I've heard of wrapping pots in bubble wrap..or fleece blankets..also heard of putting a piece of styrofoam on the top of the pot..I hope it's fine..it was beautiful..

Agree with nicholsworth... it’s a beautiful plant! Please do a follow up in the spring, old dirt. I’d love to know how it does over winter.

I may start out doing a “pot-within-a pot” at first... I’m thinking of something pretty sun-tolerant because my barrel is in strong morning sun. So I’ll be starting out with a smaller, new plant. And then I can up-pot until it’s big enough to plant directly into the barrel.

Thats my plan... feel free to comment. (And I’m thinking of using Francee, which I hope will tolerate the location.)

windymess, pot-within-a-pot sounds like a good idea and I think you could up-pot it fairly often. That is Francee, lower right in the original picture.

Beautiful Francee too, old dirt!!! So that looks like a fairly sunny spot... does KD tolerate strong sun?

Thank you windymess, this spot gets about two hours mid-day sun. The rest of the time it is fairly heavy shade. I would prefer some morning sun but the hostas seem to fair well.
