What should I do with this space?

Need help figuring out what to do with this space. This leads into a powder room. What can I do to make it make sense??

I'd take one of two approaches: (1) treat it as a quick-check mirror area, so just put some kleenex and a vase or other direction on the counter, maybe a decorative trash can underneath, or a cute stool. (2) tear it all out and make a perfectly good closet there instead. depending on where this is located, and the layout of the rest of your space, it could be for coats, linens, extra pantry, or whatever.

it would be better used as a nice closet - it would be awesome for shoes, extra purses, stacked bulky sweaters etc.

The counter probably doesn't provide much use to you. Is it off of a bedroom leading into a powder room? Or off of a public space? That might dictate what you put there in place of the countertop. If it can be removed, you can put anything there you'd like - something for storage. A lingerie type chest, since it would be narrow, might fit there and could hold quite a bit of 'stuff'. Cabinetry that is used in kitchens/bathrooms would work too.

Depends on what you use the rest of the room for and what you could best use in your life. SO many possibilities. We like books and small nooks in my family, and we don't have much storage. Depending on where this is, I might put in floor to ceiling bookshelves for the art books I most love with other objects I love for visual interest. Depending on the width I might put in a cozy bench (that could have storage in it), with books above, and turn it into draped cubby for curling up, or for the underages in my house to curl up. My family's from England, this reminds of small areas in an old English farmhouse. Here's an image of small space - possibly deeper than yours, turned into a cozy reading area:

If it were me, I'd ask, what would I love to have in my house that I don't have? And I'd google "Small awkward spaces design" and see what comes up.

One other thing - don't know what's on the wall across from the mirror. I like to strategically put up art that makes me skip a breath across from mirrors so that when I walk into a space the wall I'm faced with reflects this thing of beauty. If you don't need the square footage (horizontally and vertically) of this cubby, perhaps beauty is a great function for it.
