Stain your treads to match the first floor. Stain the handrail a much darker stain than either floor.

frenchtarragon thank you for recommendation. I am concerned it would be too blending with the French door and floors. I would prefer some accent but concern for various wood colors.

I think it would look good to have that the darker stain as well, the wood there is still part of the handrail/balusters unit, the contrast at the floor would look good, IMO. I'm about to engage in the same project for my handrail. We put in new wood floors and wood risers/treads, kept the original balusters (white) and handrail. I've painted my risers white to match the original balusters, I stained the treads to match our floor (natural walnut) and will stain the original yellow oak with General Finishes gel stain in a mix of antique walnut and Java. Java is very dark. I want the contrast with my floors but not too dark, so I'll mix them.

What kind of wood are your floors? They look great.

chickadee70 I have forest at home. :). First floor Ash, second floor Hickory and the stairs and hand-railing is white oak. We originally thought first floor was white oak. That's why picked white oak for stairs. Later we were told first floor was ash.

chickadee70 I prefer to make darker hand railing and match stairs with first floor but concern what to do with bottom part for where spindles seat. The picture don't show the contrast between first and second floors. But it is a big difference in color and tone. Second floor is much darker. It is as dark as I really would like to see my hand railing to be. Thus I am confused.

From top: Jacobean, Ebony, Dark Walnut, 50/50 Jacobean and Ebony, 50/50 Jacobean and Dark Walnut, and English Chestnut at the bottom. We went with 50/50 Jacobean and Dark Walnut and love it! It's hard to describe colors, but if I worked for Miniwax Color Naming Dept., I would call it Pecan.

Sofiateren, Would you consider painting the handrail unit white or off white? Paint the risers white and stain the treads? That would solve any issues with the staining colors. Either way I think it would look fabulous if you already have white trim in your house as well. Use an oil paint/top coat for white so any fingerprints or marks come off easier.

chickadee70 thank you for helping. I think white risers are too traditional for our home. The first suggestions made think stronger to match treads and risers with the first lighter floor colors and I will stain handrail, balusters and base for spindles darker color to make an accent. I pretty much settle on that.

I think it will look great!
