Without knowing what the style of furniture and rest of the items in the room is, it is quite difficult to make a suggestion. Saying that, a pendant light or a cluster of smaller lights will work perfectly. Make sure that the lamps you use make it bright enough for homework to be done (LED lamps are perfect for this, or daylight lamps - 3100K - 4500K).

We just moved in, so please forgive the clutter. The room is huge and long. We plan to pick up another table and some matching chairs at some point. This table was given to us.

I love more modern, straight lines. The flooring is sheet vinyl and is on the list to replace. We are taking it one thing at a time. Lights are important since we are here all day.

This is a great idea. Will probably need a larger fixture for our area. Thanks!

I would concur a more linear fixture would complement the long space. As an example, this is a fixture I designed in parchment and black steel that provides soft and ample lighting. There might be similar options in the market place that would meet your criteria as well.
