oooohhhh I love your cabinets as they are.. I know this is not what you want to hear. But I have always loved that contemporary elegant cherry wood slab cabinet door.

But you want a change. Did your painter recommend what he likes to use? I believe Benjamin Moore makes a glossy industrial kind of paint called Corotech. I have never used it but I wonder if a BM dealer can direct you on what could work for your project.

Thank you for your compliment! We designed this kitchen about 14 years ago, and i still like it... It was my husband idea to paint it, do something different. Our painter had a test run in our bathroom vanity, we tried to achieve high gloss with on it. It came out nice but it was a lot of work. Would be nice to find a better, easier road to do the kitchen.

Hi Beth. The quote was $5000, possible over a bit too. He did our vanity in the bathroom, spray painted it. Came out nice, but its a lot of work. He doesn't want to use oil based paint, because it will yellow over time.

Please make a change some where else if needed. Fabulous kitchen, in love madly with the cabinets!

that's a fair quote. if you're happy with the bath cabinet, that's good. do you know how they were primed? proper priming will assure proper adhesion and more durability over time. he should use an oil based primer after proper cleaning and sanding. yes, it's a ton of work.

BMAdvance , Cabinet Coat, SW ProClassic are alkaloid hybrids that are water base but act like oil. Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac is the only oil base paint that guarantees no yellowing. it's the glossiest of any of them and very durable. it's also very expensive. It's easily sprayed and looks beautiful when finished. I know someone who sprays vintage furniture w/this paint.

Do NOT touch those cabinets! They are right on trend for the next hot thing. They look like you did it yesterday.

Mid uou want to change something, it should be the backsplash and counters. Too dark. And you need under cabinet lighting. That would make a a huge difference in the right direction.

I am afraid I agree with the posters that say leave the wood cabinets alone. Also that much stark white that you are contemplating on slab doors runs the risk of making the kitchen hospital-y.

I would freshen the kitchen by changing the window treatments to something brighter and more current. Remove the window valence; it has an odd proportion and a bit fussy. If you are more ambitious, change the backsplash to something light and modern. Those changes will make quite a difference, and be a lot easier than trying to turn the lovely wood cabinets into something they just are not.

Leave the gorgeous wood cabinets, but consider changing the black backsplash to a white glass. If you have it in the budget, I'd change the black countertops to a white as well. It will look like a new kitchen, and your current cabinets are perfect for the look you are going for.

I agree--Don't paint those cabinets! This is coming from someone who loves white cabinets. I just installed white cabinets in my home. But if I had those cabinets, I would keep those cabinets---AS IS!!! Also I would keep the backsplash and dark counters. I think lighting, lighting, lighting, and the blinds! Change that, don't paint the cabinets. But as the other posters point out, if you are dying for a change, change the backsplash, and/or the countertop. I like the white island and black perimeter countertops though. I think you have a beautiful kitchen.

How about offering a compromise of changing the backsplash?

A second option is to sand and restain to a more current shade.

Keep the beautiful cabinets, change out the dark/blackish backsplash to white or nearly white. I think it will have a huge effect.

I vote to keep the gorgeous cabs also. I tried to find some pics of what it might look like if you went with a white counter and white/light BS (which is how I'd go). You can at least get a feel, as none of these are exactly what you already have.

Love them as is! I would change backsplash&perimeter counter tops with the $5000 you would have spent on painting the cabs

I really like your cabinets. I agree with lightening up the backsplash and counter to tie in your island.

Beth09 thank you for finding these pics! My husband has been trying to convince me to put some kind of molding top of the cabinets, that goes all the way up to the ceiling. He thinks ours looks unfinished. One of your pictures shows a very similar cabinets that goes all the way .
He won’t touch the black granite but I think he will agree to change the backsplash.

I normally like a dark splash, but w/the dark cabs and dark granite, it's a bit too dark. since he won't change dark granite, I can suggest a different splash for you. just let me know what the decision is on the cabinets

I think we will pass on painting the cabinets... I like some white glass mosaic b/s maybe with some light silver or gray in it.

There are several things you could consider. If you are set on painting, only paint the upper cabinets and leave the lowers cherry. A second option is creating some open shelving, especially on the range wall. Remove the wall cabinets and replace with shelves. Consider adding a stainless utensil holder above stove to break up the dark tile

Honestly, I think a white glass backsplash is all it would need for a fresh more modern vibe!

Another vote against painting those gorgeous cabinets.

As of now, I'm trying to price out and get samples of mosaic white glass with some gray, black splash. I don't think we paint the cabinets! I may add some pendant light above the island too. Thanks for the advice!
