Color matching appliances and cabinets

We want our cabinets, Blue Star 30" range, and our under cabinet Vent A Hood all to match the Ben Moore color on our walls. Our cabinet maker can do anything, Blue Star says they can custom color match, but our appliance vendor told us that Vent A Hood doesn't do custom colors. I looked online, Vent A Hood's website says they do, so I asked our appliance vendor. She talked to them and told me: "I don't recommend a Vent A Hood because they told me that they cannot guarantee a color match even if they use the same RAL #."

I like the idea of a Vent A Hood because they are supposed to be very quiet, powerful, and well made. Also, a painted Blue Star hood costs $2,500, which seems absurdly expensive to me.

Can someone explain to me what a RAL# is, why Blue Star can match it, our cabinet makers can match it, but Vent A Hood cannot? Is it that none of them really can make this guarantee but Vent A Hood is just being more explicit about it? I wonder too if my cabinetmaker could paint a Vent A Hood for us. It would at least match the cabinets if not the range. Any thoughts?

Look at the photos ... the color match isn't perfect since 2 surfaces made out of different materials and painted with different paint types will never be exactly the same.

Maybe that is what VAH is saying, that enamel paint on metal will never look exactly like a BM paint chip. Can VAH do a sample for you? Tell them you'll pay for a sample, if you are seriously considering their product.

I think what she is talking about is not just the metal to wood difference look but the metal to metal of a Blue Star range paint job looking different from a paint job on Vent A Hood hood. Those are metal to metal comparisons. Do you think they would or could look similar enough to each other?

The substrate and texture of metal and wood make it very difficult to match if not impossible, not to mention RAL paint batches can vary. When you try to match cabinets, range and hood your dealing with 3 different paint batches. It only needs to be off by a shade or two to look like you tried to match and failed :(

What about doing a custom wood hood with a VAH insert? Then at least it would match the cabinets. You can do it in a regular metal hood shape instead of a custom hood shape

Why not make the hood out of wood and use an insert and then you're only concern is matching the blue star to the cabinets.

Our kitchen cabinets and appliances are on an L, with the range/hood being on the small part of the L. The designer and I thought a lot about doing wood with an insert but ultimately decided that the least chunky look would be to have a painted metal hood. The designer is the owner of the cabinet company and I appreciate that while she stood to profit from creating a wood hood, she agreed if I am going for minimal protrusion, painted metal best fits the bill.

If you have any examples though of a wood hood that looks as minimally invasive (I sound like I'm talking about surgery) please share.

Trevor, thanks for explaining why two metal products might vary from one another is painted from two different batches of paint. I guess what would solve the problem is listening to a Blue Star hood and seeing if it is as quiet as a Vent A Hood. So hard to find places that have all of these appliances in working to hear the sound.

Give up on everything 100% matching. Metal powder coating isn’t house paint isn’t cabinet conversion varnish. All have different chemistry. Different pigments. It would be better to develop a harmonious palette composed of deliberately different, but still closely aligned colors. Like a cream, bisque, and light tan palette. All the same family, but different values. Use varying shades of the main as well as textural changes from matte to semi gloss to gloss. Even the same paint color looks different in different sheens. Use that to your advantage.
