Was the picture of the zinnias next to a bowl with zinnias on them. I've seen pictures of bowls called fruit bowl zinnias. There may never have been a series of fruit bowl zinnia flowers. That is just a wild guess but it makes sense to me.

No. I saw the picture in an old book on annuals, was on the front cover and the credits listed them as "Fruit Bowl Mix" zinnia.

Yes, there was once a Fruit Bowl Mix of zinnias. As far as I know, it is no longer available, so I guess you could consider it as "extinct" for that reason. Also "extinct" are the Zenith F1 Hybrid Cactus zinnias and the Luther Burbank pastels shades of cactus zinnias.

Fruit Bowl was just a color selection from the Giant Dahlia flowered zinnias (red for apple, orange for orange, lemon yellow for lemon, purple for grape, and so on). If that color range appeals to you, you could re-create it by planting a mix of zinnias and discarding all the colors that didn't qualify at first bloom time. Or, you could purchase available separate "fruit" colors from a commercial source. For example, the "Gigantica" strain of zinnias from Hazzard's Seeds contains a variety of separate colors that you could select from, as do several other strains of large zinnias.

What I liked about the picture of the Fruit Bowl zinnias was the center pop of color -- the blooms are flattish and kind of cactus-y (is that a word?), so the vibrant centers really stood out. I do grow a mix of Benary's Giants which are terrific, but I'd love to grow those Fruit Bowl!
