I use compost to top dress, and blood meal for nitrogen. Also alfalfa meal or soybean meal as an all purpose fertilizer.

Organic growing is less about substituting an organic fertilized for a synthetic one and more about building up the soil with organic matter, compost and any other type of organic matter you can lay your hands on. You want to work toward a level of 6 to 8 percent organic matter in your soil and few, even organic, fertilizers will help you get there.

The grass and plants need to be fertilized.

Are you sure? Are they showing signs of a deficiency?

Unless there is an identified problem, fertilizing is probably not needed.

Most types of turf grasses/lawns definitely benefit from being fertilized. But then again, most folks think lawns are low maintenance but they are not.......if you intend to keep them thick and healthy :-)) I would recommend using seed meals (soy, flax, cottonseed, canola) on a lawn. If other planting areas are mulched routinely, it is very likely you do not need to fertilize.
