Even with whitewash, you would still have that busy pattern. Your walnut mantel idea seems perfect, and I like the idea of using shelves to break up the pattern more. With the shelves filled, and maybe a large painting resting on the mantel, you will cover enough of the stone to still get the flavor of it but without being so overhwhelming.

I LOVE the stone! The problem is the fireplace! It is insubstantial compared to that big expanse of stone. You need to have an excellent carpenter build a gorgeous, substantial mantel from reclaimed, stunning wood, doubling the visual "size" of the fireplace and also adding dramatic impact. Then add a significant piece of art above the mantel...but NOT in the same wood/stone colors; you need something in contrast. Do away with the dated screen. Stone is a wonderful, natural material, but the fireplace is rendered nearly "invisible".

Adding framing elements as she described would add the missing design principals of balance and proportion. Wish I could see the rest of the room though to get the bigger picture.

Question: Is that real stone? It may be just the photo and light, but it looks flat to me, like it was painted on.

I love the stone, too. A chunky mantel, cleanup of the smoky area, and some art on the mantel are all you need. To me, it seems like there are several soft colors in the stone you could work with when choosing furnishings.

I had one just like it. And while I do love stone - mine was a little overwhelming as well. I went with stucco and I couldn't be more pleased.

I really do not mind the stone. I cannot see the rest of the room or flooring but I think you have a great focal point and texture. I like the idea of a mantle, maybe 4"h and 8"d. However, I would set it off to one side and not center it over the opening. The more finished the wood, the more contemporary it will look. Get rid of the fireplace screen, it is the wrong size for the opening. You could go for a clean, clear glass screen and more modern tools. Also, there are companies you can find in your area on Google that will come out and clean the face of the fireplace and remove the soot on the stone. If you paint the room a cool grey, the room will look good with the stone and feel current, not dated.

In addition to the decorative details, be sure to have a chimney sweep come in and clean your flu and also determine why the smoke is not totally going up the flu
