Hooks. Put strips of 1x3 or so across the wall, well-anchored to the studs, and start adding hooks.

Plan for the heavy things down low - backpacks with short sturdy hooks just high enough to get them off the floor, and so children can reach them.

Leave a space for long things like umbrellas.

I have one above my sewing area where I hang tools and a rack for quilting rulers. A shelf at the top holds my radio. Love having things I frequently need in view.

You could just plaster and paint, then use Command hooks for some stuff.
It doesn't need to all be the same, necessarily.

Backpacks on hooks need some strong attachment, so those coat hooks mounted on wooden boards are good, bcs you can put them anywhere. (or the DIY version Lazy_gardens is talking about).

Love slat boards and you can change the hardware.
