You don’t ruin expensive modern Euro lacquered cabinet doors by attaching doodads and painting them. Leave them alone. Modern streamlined is the next big trend.

Thank you for your opinion but I had rather like the way my kitchen looks than what is trendy.

I will post pictures tomorrow, any ideas on how to changes them will be welcomed.

You realy need to pull back on painting cabinets. It's easy to make a mess for which there's no cure. At minium you should have someone look at the cabinets before making reccomendations. That or remove a door and take it to a paint expert so they know what is on doors now before making reccomendations.

I wasn’t aware of the paint issue. I am fine with just re staining it, I just hate the red in these. This home is a living room kitchen combo. When they built it they have every cabinet and or wood objet this same color!! Bathrooms, window seals, entertainment center and molding! It’s just over load to me with the shiny. (I am just realizing the bar isn’t the same color as cabinets but just as shiny!)

Paint,stain or any change is best left to experts. It's not simple to refinish cabinets even when you have a lot of experience,and lead's to disaster when you do it following internet instructions. A good refinisher can change the gloss level but people telling you how after seeing pictures are fools. Surf the net long enough and you will find instructions you are looking for but the result will look 10 time worse than when you started. Go do a few thrift store end tables and dressers to see how they turn out before taking this on.

We had a cabinet refinishing pro come in to look at our stained wood kitchen cabinets. We wanted them either painted, or the stain changed. He said that painting was a much better idea than re-staining. In fact he wouldn't even quote us on re-staining because he said it was so much work, and so unlikely to give a good result, that he didn't want to do it. The stain color is right in the wood.

Painting would also let you add some trim. But be warned that painting is a really big job, and it's hard to do well. Lots of pictures of fails on the internet.

You may want to look into buying new cabinet and drawer faces, and having the cabinet boxes refinished to match. If the kitchen is otherwise in good shape, and you like the layout, that may be an economical alternative to new cabinets.

Another option is to change the shiny finish to a more matte finish, either for the kitchen or for some of the other wood in the house. My sister had her floors refinished, and they were done in a shiny finish which was not what she asked for. She had them re-done immediately in a matte finish. I don't know what would be involved in that.

A good paint store will be able to advise you.

You want something so completely different that you might as well drive from Miami to NY via Los Angeles. The labor involved will so outstrip what you are starting with that it’s complete folly.

You want a gut remodel. Plan a gut remodel. You can’t get to where you want to go starting there. Or adjust your wants.

That wood is glorious. I understand not liking the glossy finish, but the wood itself is stunning. Painting it would be a crime.

Etta, just for the record, I wouldn't like it either. It reminds me very much of the shiny varnish of the kitchen cabinets I grew up with, made by a local handyman in 1967. Are those runs in the varnish that I have circled? The finish looks very uneven in that second picture. Especially since you say that all the wood in the house (bathrooms, window moldings) is the same, I don't think these were factory finished. Probably all made and finished on site, as our house was. And a shiny finish shows every flaw in finishing.

Klem1, we are in a small town and no one besides Lowe’s would come out and they will just want me to buy new cabinets.

Yes those are shiny runs but you really can’t see them ! I will post one spot that has stain runs... the whole house is different finishes, some door/ window frames have no shine (like they never finished it) while others almost blind you. Definitely not factory, they were built with the house..

HandyMac, I was afraid of those finishes wouldn’t be realistic. Hopefully if nothing else I can get trim to match or give a different look. As you suggested contrasting colors.
I do have some tools, I’m always collecting lol

AnnKH, thank you, my husband and I both love the grain design in the wood, the one thing he told me I couldn’t touch was the bar! Will post a better pic of it.


The floors in last pic use to shine but nothing has been done with them in years, the black lines are from a chair that was there and everywhere she put that chair there is a mark on the floor that I can’t get up! What are yalls thoughts on what to do with the floors? I’ve been watching YouTube to find out how to clean them lol
