Help me pick tile for my kitchen!

I have a tile guy coming tomorrow and I don't have tile yet! So yes, practically an emergency, lol. We are remodeling our very very dated 70s kitchen slowly.

We put in new countertops last week so it just looks gnarly.
We are doing floors and backsplash.

I am completely clueless with regard to the floor tiles. I know for sure I don't like the wood look (it just doesn't appeal to me, personally). I was hoping for a light tile and was considering marble or gray travertine

My question is, do you think these 16x16 and 12x24 tiles will be too big for our narrow galley kitchen?

Does anybody have any other ideas for floor? I know I want tile but when shopping around I was pretty underwhelmed.

For backsplash I am considering this subway tile laid in a chevron/herringbone pattern; it is 3x9, do you think it is too long?

Thank you! Any comments or ideas will be appreciated, I am very clueless right now!

to enlarge a galley I believe large squares on the diagonal work well. You can have a two-color contrast theme with that if you like also. [I think they look great]. Looks like your tile selection will go through to the dinette..which I would place a rug under whatever table you have.....so the contrasting diagonal tiles could be a lot of fun, and show up around the perimeter of the dinette then. The backsplash shown is cream and uneven-[handmade?] Stick to a basic smooth ceramic tile in my opinion...maybe do something with color. Your counter is great...I don't see any color anywhere in your pics..do you fancy some color?

Thanks for the comments! I agree about the lack of color. I was hoping I could add a little tinge of color through paint (not sure what color yet either, but that's probably our project right after the tiles). WIll probably look for something a bit warm.

The crackled subway tile is beautiful! I will be looking at something similar when I go to Floor & Décor later. You made me consider gray tiles too, and a little bit of color.

Your choices are exactly what you have. Which I wouldn’t change. It’s a very 80’s look. We’re your counters country blue? Mauve? Save your money and spend it on a designer to develop a cohesive plan of attack. Piecemeal decisions don’t work for the best. And you’re getting ready to regret this one.

Youd do much better to deal with the lighting issue rather than the tile.

I'm confused. The first picture shows new cabinets and a marble counter. The second picture shows your old kitchen.

Is the first your actual kitchen now?

For the floor, I would do a gray tile. You can do a white subway tile with light gray grout to show off the chevron pattern, or as suggested a gray crackle.

Sophie, I don't get your comment about an 80's look? All the builds in my area with houses going in the 2-3 million dollar range, they are using white kitchens and marble counters.

Yes, the first is the actual kitchen, sorry for the confusion! I used listing photos for the rest of them (because I don't have current ones handy). It is the same cabinets, just refinished and painted with new hardware. We also upgraded counters and sink. We didn't have any backsplash which is why we have an urgent need to install one. :/

    Thanks eld6161 for the comments!

We also have stainless steel appliances now so it goes with the rest of the gray.

Just as the supreme klutz speaking here, don't go with marble or anything slippery / shiny for flooring...

I would suggest going for some contrast in your floor to ground the space. Maybe a dark gray or wood-look tile. The floors you picked seem like they are trying to mimic the counter, and that doesn’t work.

i agree with orec3. while i love the floors u picked out, they really don't go with the counter. you have two totally different patterns and they don't mesh well together. one of those has to be the star and since you counters are installed they are. love the idea of a darker gray B/S.

i personally would do a wood look floor to break up all the white and gray. if you are def. against that, then find a floor that is "quiet". you don't need to add another pattern, let the counters sing

congratulations on not sending useful cabinets to the landfill. your floorplan, from what I can see, gives you a very functional kitchen. I'm actually a big fan of galleys.
love your countertop selection. very similar to what my friend is looking at. she also wants white subway. I cautioned her to make sure the white of the tile and the white of the counter are in the same range. bring samples home.
grout can change the appearance of the tile, too. if you are not comfortable making those choices alone, can you hire a local professional for a few hours to check your ideas? or do you have a color maven friend?
those last few decisions on backsplash and grout will make your project. and, you've done so well so far.
one thing I'd point out. your outlets are all based on a three inch backsplash. do you know if the wiring comes from above or below? if from below, you could modernize by turning the outlets horizontal, and lowering them. even if they are from above, and no extra wire, I'd turn them horizontal. doesn't look like you have room to raise them, and hide under the cabinets. I don't see much of an apron to hide outlets or under cabinet lighting.
best of luck. I am sure you will enjoy your updates.

Thank you for the replies! I'm on my way to lowes and f& d and I'm taking your input with me. I'm bringing some samples of our counter and hardwood floors. Wish us luck! :) bringing 2 small kids with me

Lowes has a wood look porcelain tile that has a lot of gray in it. I used it in my house. It's 8x48 tile. Looks absolutely fantastic. Would go good with that countertop. No shiny tile in the kitchen! No to trying to match the counter with similar pattern floor tiles.

Thanks for all the input! I ended up not doing the kitchen floors yet because I just couldn't find tiles that I liked, really needed time to think it through. We ended up doing the bathroom floors though

For the backsplash we used classic 3x6 white subway tile. I was such an indecisive mess on Friday so I went with my original plan. I love it!

Thanks for all your input, you guys made me realize how busy the design was looking. I was trying to jam so many elements in 1 kitchen.

Looks very nice :) keep us posted when/if you change out the floor too!
