Cheryl, I understand you want a little ventilation. With air circulating there would be little to no condensation and you'd have to moisten the soil every so often.

My plastic lids were thin enough to use a hand-held hole puncher on its sides.

K, so it needs regular ventalation? I was opening it once a week but can prop open the lid if need.

Good observation - right now the soil looks too wet and condensation confirms it. If you prop the lid with a toothpick to let it breath - you will get rid of this extra water. Too wet - they rot. You need humid soil, not wet.

Irina_co , that explains all my rotting then. Still trying to find the moisture balance in the soil. Trying again, now to find the tooth picks!!

Hmmm.... I am sure you will find something else to stick between the lid and the box...pencil, a drinking straw - just keep the darn thing open till it dries up a bit!
