Personally I try and not use the 12x12, (sorry but it can date a floor if not very careful. Its fun to create a rug effect in tile, with a center in three 16 x16 tiles set like diamond pattern with 6x6 set around all the fill in parts,(may have to alter tile size to fit and in this case a 12x12 just to create a rug pattern is ok. or try just the new plank style tile that looks like wood.

The larger tiles throughout will give the house a very high end, luxurious, and most importantly, continuous look. I would continue them so that it leaves the space feeling more open with minimal flooring changes. Good Luck :)
