Take a magnifying glass to them, that should tell you if they are prints or paintings.
I suspect youwere right in saying they are prints with added brush strokes.
What are the frames made of? They appear in too good condition to be really old.

Linda, I am now sure these are prints, but the frames are puzzling to me. The backs are all wood, but I don't know what the black front and sides are made of. They are far from perfect, with some apparent repairs and some of the paint seems to be peeling. There are also tiny nail holes where they are attached to the back. The frame fronts are not wood, and almost sound like hollow plastic when tapped. At the same time, they do not really look or feel like plastic and some of the paint seems to be peeling. Any further ideas?

I had some frames which were smaller (maybe 3"x4") and look very similar. Somewhere on mine it said it was made in Italy

I got them in a market in Holland
