I've found that I get a greater percentage of rounds when the cloves and/or bulbils are planted in spring without prior chilling. It's a combination of cold and lenghthening daylight hours that trigger clove formation.

You might try starting them under lights like onion seed. That way you might avoid the cold triggered cloved bulbs, and then tranpslant them out once the ground has thawed next spring and the weather has stabilized.

This sounds so interesting! I was just mourning that as I didn't plant garlic last Fall it's too late. There is a way to plant in spring and harvest something this year?? Sorry for being so clueless. I do garden, but it's been years, and not really garlic. :-)

It is possible, but spring planted garlic tend to be smaller. We intentionally do it this way to get the smaller rounds to re-plant next early winter.
