It isn't so much a question of season length but rather the composition (starch vs. sugar) of each variety. Plus the season length labels of early, mid, and late labels are very mis-leading. What is an "early" for some is a "mid" for others etc. Then there is the how-stored issues. Yukon Golds for example will barely store for a few weeks for some while others consider them long storage because of their colder storage methods than folks like us have.

So the answer to your question is - it depends and you are right, it is sketchy. ;)

Russets have a generally good storage rep and so do Kennebecs due to their high starch content. Yukon Golds aren't generally considered ideal for storing due to their higher sugar content, same for many of the reds.

Thanks, Dave. That's exactly what I needed to know! Storage is tough here with summers. I usually leave mine in the ground under a thick layer of straw (I've only ever grown Yukon Golds) and harvest as needed unless frost beckons. Seems to help. I suppose I'll grow some Yukon Golds for the flavor, but I'll probably try Kennebecs for a main crop that I can store over the winter. I'll do some more looking
