I need help in decorating our living room.

We need help decorating our living room...

These are the items of furniture we currently have.
We installed these parquet floors as well.

We are looking for a TV cabinet and we dont know what to get.

Should we keep this coffee table or should we get something else? If so, what are your suggestions?

Thank you

    Yes correct.

BTW, I think your idea of two chairs is much better than a second couch in your LR furniture configuration.

As to the media wall, 65 inch TV is huge :). Let me see what would work on that wall without overwhelming the space.

Nice start! With the pattern of the coffee table, finding a patterned rug that doesn't conflct or come across as too much might be difficult. I think a natural seagrass rug would be terrific looking. A sophisticated, textured look that would set off everything else. There are very few rooms that DON'T look good with them!

The chairs are just fine...it's a nice burst of color. Their style is transitional and simple so they'd work with many pieces. A carryover of the red a little bit more might be nice....or not! Your call.

Are you looking for lamps, art right now? The overhead lighting is more sophisticated than the norm but you might not always want that on....warmer, incandescent lighting with lamps would add another option and a different ambience when you want it. It's a sophisticated looking room; I love all the neutrals.

Oh, those aren't parquet wood floors. Parquet is a design created with small pieces and strips of wood ...usually designed in squares.

Here's a link to the seagrass rug. I can personally vouch for this co. Exc quality. Seagrass is also very cleanable which sisal is NOT. That I found out with a few red wine spills!

IMO a Persian area rug is classic and works with the room and your coffee table.

I will look for another one.

Yes we are open to wallpaper, art, laps and chandeliers as well. :)

Thank you all for your replies.

For the best proportional look, make sure the tv cabinet is longer than the tv itself by at least a few inches on each side.

Here is another Persian area rug that might work. Click on the second link to the website to take a look at the entire selection. First link to a specific rug

Looks like Claire and I have different visions for your room, but that is what Houzz is all about...

This is a rig that my wife likes.

She would love to find something like the picture suitable for the space.

Looks like your wife is leaning toward a transitional style with this contemporary carpeting.

As to the TV area, here the TV is "hidden" against a black wall which can work with your room. You have to look close to see the TV because it blends in the wall when it is off.

Great floor! Great space. And "yes" to a large rug like others have mentioned.

Have you thought about putting the sofa facing the window and chairs with the back of the sofa facing the dining area? It would define the two spaces. Also, the cocktail table is narrow so it would sit better between the two chairs facing the sofa.

Separate the chairs a little more and you could even add a small table between them.

Take a pix of your coffee table, reduce it's size, print it out and lay it over rug photos online to get a rough idea of how they look together. A busy pattern might really fight with the table.

Gwc I like your idea, but what I do with both walls.? The walls facing each other?

I would actually leave some of those colors on the rug your wife is leaning towards to for accent pillows

Your couch is wonderful, but the chrome and glass table next to it does not fit. You need something with more presence and bulk. The same is actually true of the little table on the other side. Even though you appear to have ceiling lighting, in a living room it's harsh and doesn't give a welcoming feeling. You need lamps beside the couch. One could be a floor lamp and another a lamp on a table.

Since you have red chairs and red pillows, your rug also needs to have some red in it. You could also go for a mainly blue rug with touches of red in it, but it should be something dark to ground your light furniture. Some cream in the rug would also be a good idea. If you want something with a more modern vibe, you could go in this direction. You'll also need a rug in the dining area which should be similar in style and color, although of course not identical. You do need more color in your lovely space, and definitely paintings on the wall to make these rooms more dramatic and interesting. I would recommend that you stay away from wallpaper. It can be really tricky to pick the right thing and to make it look good with paintings. If you don't like it, then it's a hassle to remove.

^I like it ingrid. An Oriental or Persian area rug does not mean the room is traditional.

I wouldn’t change your seating layout for the wall the sofa is at this moment is the longest wall and with the chairs on that wouldn’t look symmetrical unless you have the chairs facing the sofa.

Would they look nice if they are both (the sofa and the two chairs) face each other?

It would look nice but you want your space to look symmetrical but if you do it that way you’re space will seem smaller the way have it now makes it bigger

It is classic design to have the two chairs face the sofa. It is also classic to have the sofa in your current location with a chair on either side of the sofa.

It looks like you and your wife want a lighter rug for a more monochromatic type look in this room. Personally I would have it a little darker to ground the furniture, but the room needs to reflect your style.

Thank you Denita for all your help.
    We really appreciate it.

You need end table and lamps - move what you have there elsewhere. The two red chairs need to be further apart - too close for comfort. A small drinks table between them would be welcome.

Here is a beige rug that is a little more monochromatic, but has enough color to ground it....and enough interest.

Here is one that is similar to the two you posted that are abstract in nature but this one has a little bit of the burgandy

OP, of the abstract rugs, I do like the last rug you posted. It doesn't have the pastel colors of the other rugs.

    Hello all again,

This is what we decided on doing for the time being.

    Your feedback is appreciated.

With the chairs on opposite sides, it looks like it is too tight to get to the sofa. Having the sofa on the long wall would make the room more welcoming.

^Agree, the chairs can still be on either side of the sofa, but use the long wall for the sofa.

I like this arrangement and I agree it feels tight, so what you can do is, take each one of the maroon chairs away from the wall and move each to be on the front side of the coffee table. Each one should be kitty cornered and angled to the opposite corner of the couch wall. That will open up the space and still present a lovely setting when walking in to the room.

    That way?

I was thinking too that you should have the chairs at the corners of the table. That looks better. You have a great room to work with.

You really need a rug that at least is large enough for two legs from each piece of furniture to fit on. You need some height variation too...an end table for the sofa with a lamp, maybe a smaller round end table for one of the chairs, of course some art.

I'm thinking a Persian rug with some pinks or light blues. I think the room needs to "loosen up" a little.

Get some Turkish pillow on Etsy to pull it together.

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/544618418/kilim-pillow-20x20-nches-50x50-cm-hand?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=turkish%20pillow&ref=sr_gallery-1-9

I also think a table that isn't so chunky.

One last thing :-) Recessed lights serve a purpose but generally light shining down doesn't give a warm , pleasantly lit room. Natural light, table lamps and floor lamps will give a nicer light.

I love that color red, I would want to play it up in a rug, not get a bland one, because your walls and floors and other furniture is so plain. But I love color. I have seen Persian patterned rugs with a solid interior so as not to clash with the table. But a plain light colored rug that matches your grey/cream vibe would work as well if you're going for that all white washed look that is so popular now. I'm too much of a spiller to live in a house like that, lol!

I'd go for some big modern art playing up the red for across from the TV, something that can stand up to the TV for attention and won't be dwarfed. Do you want a chandelier for over the dining table? I like some more cozier light in a room, so I would get some lamps for the living room first and then try and coordinate the chandelier with them. But that may just be me.

We would love to see some chandelier options.

Where will you put the tv with your latest setup?

There is actually no place for the TV with the current setup.

We might have to keep it in the other TV room
  • 7 years ago
Thinking of doing something like this for the TV.

Hi Mohammed, I would try to steer away from decorating around the TV when the TV is the "center" of the idea. That looks fine for night clubs and hotels but I do not think it would translate well for a home.

It would look nice to have a sideboard that is a little wider than the TV underneath to ground it and you can mount the TV above.

^Agree. You have two excellent long walls for the TV if you go back to the sofa on one wall and flank the two chairs on either side of the sofa. The TV and console then go on the other wall. It is a more manageable furniture arrangement IF you use your TV.

I agree with Denita. I also thing that the rug your wife loves would work just fine. It's important to have items you love. If you do move the furniture back to the wall, do what Denita says.

If you watch TV a lot, nothing wrong with decorating a wall around the TV. But I think you could find something a little easier to incorporate. But if you are a handy dandy person . . . I liked the way you had it before where the dining area was open to the living room. But maybe you want separation? I think you need to figure that out first, before deciding on what to do with the TV.

I actually really liked your bar cart next to the sofa. Also, the height was better than what you have ther enow.

As far as rugs, have you looked at www.rugsusa.com ?

Right now, they have 80% off, but sales are quite frequently (although the 80% is more than usually off).

First one is 384.00 for a 9x12, second is just under 200.00, third one 214.00

    Hey everyone,

    It’s been a while.
I would like to update you on our final interior style.

Now we are stuck with the center coffee table. Any recommendations?

    Thank you in advance
