Bump out sink base

36" sink base with 33" Kohler Whitehaven apron sink. Inset cabinets. My wall at bottom of this post.

Last minute decision. I am considering bumping out sink base to gain a couple of inches of faucet space/counter space behind sink plus I kind of like the look.

Something like this. Can I do this? Will it work? Thank you.

My wall.

Mine are casement. So I don't think it's an issue.

I was at my daughters for a week helping with her baby who had RSV. We bathed the baby in her large sink. The wood behind her sink was just ruined. I couldn't believe it. That is why I'm considering this.

I also love that look and am planning on doing it in my kitchen reno. Your sink is nicely centered in front of your windows and looks balanced, I would do it!

Are the cabinets ordered/in yet? You have to make sure the sink cabinet has flush finished ends or that you can get a cabinet skin to cover an unfinished side. You will need something additional for the valance as well to cover the part that is now deeper than the adjacent cabinet.

What would your aisle clearance be reduced to? I'm assuming you have an island behind the sink, but if you don't, then ignore this!

Main line...no, order is in and cabinet maker and kd are going back and forth finalizing last minute details before they start building, so she is working with me to make sure I don't have any last minute requests/change i.e.: just changed the size of the rails from 1.5" to 1".

Good point re; sides being finished and valance. I thought I would check here to see if this would work before throwing a last minute request her way and looking like a flake.

    Thank you for your input.

Gthigpen...yes, I have an island behind. It is 4 ft clearance exactly. Do you think the few inches will be a mistake? Good catch.

Luckyblueeye....how many inches are you going out?

The inspiration pic you posted looks like it only bumps out 2-3". So your reduced aisle width would be 45-46" instead of 48". I still think that's plenty, especially in a non-prep/non-cooking space. But I'm no kitchen expert. My clearances in my kitchen are 42-44" and I like that distance. My previous kitchen was around 40" and I thought that was fine too.

I'm planning on bumping out about 3", the cabinet maker is a family member and I will fully trust his expertise when it comes to time to actually build them....so far I'm still designing and dreaming. My fridge is on the same wall (at the end) and it's not counter depth, so I think that the sink bump out will look nice with it.

This one is 3LittleFishies...it is subtle and just right imo. Barely bumped out?

Anyone...how far out do you think it is bumped out? 1-2" maybe.

Looks like a Kohler 36" sink in what size sink base? Is 1 1/2" of sink base enough on each side of sink? This one appears to have more.

Lucky...lucky you! I wish I was more like that. I do trust my kd. But, so much expertise here...can't help but take advantage of it!

In that last picture, her apron sink also sticks out so the counter top bump would look too long and skinny if she had the 2.5-3" cabinet bump.... IMO.

I love my bumped out sink cabinet. I'm wondering though, since it appears you have a non-symmetrical layout, if it will look "funny" or draw unwanted attention to that issue.

I tend to like symmetry so in your case I probably wouldn't bump it out. It looks like you have less space to the left than you have to the right. I also toyed around with the same idea but in the end I instead bumped out my range top 3" with the adjacent 15" cabinets.

Idstarr and Wilson...wow, I hadn't even thought of that. No, it is not symmetrical. When we tried to move the windows over to the right before planning the kitchen it messed with the exterior architecture.

ldstarr...will you post a pic of your bumpout?

so is the consensus that I need to leave it alone since that wall is not symmetrical?

Sophie and Cooks Kitchen...are you around?
