shallow depth cabinets

We understand that standard cabinet depth is 24 inches, but we are completely remodeling our kitchen and in part of the kitchen the wall comes out 6 inches. We want the countertop to be the same depth all across the wall so on half of it the depth would be the normal 24, would it be a problem to have 18 inch depth for the other half? We will have 12 inch wall cabinets all across the top.

I hope this makes sense! Here is a rough drawing of the walls of my kitchen, you can see on one side the wall changes six inches....

Sorry but it isn't. It will always be one large room.

    Thanks for the input!

The drawing makes the six inches on one side and threw on the others look more dramatic than it actually is.

We ripped out 18" deep cabinetry in our kitchen 18 months ago. Nothing wrong with it; the previous owners loved it, and wanted to take it with them. We were happy to oblige. It was custom work, mostly pantry pull-out drawers.

You might want to reconsider 12" deep upper cabinets, though, as it's well-nigh impossible to work at an 18" deep countertop with a 12" deep cabinet knocking your forehead 19" up. Better to go with shallow open shelves above, or shunt the upper cabinets way up (which look odd and will be fairly inaccessible), or run the 18" deep cabinetry from floor to ceiling ... awesome pantry space!

You can use shallow depth cabinets or wall cabinets on a toe kick and pull them forward to be flush with 24" deep bases.

Do you need it to be a standard depth counter and a shallow counter? Why not a standard depth counter and one six inches deeper? It looks like you have room.

If you do that the counter will still have to follow the jog in the walls. Why not frame out the two sides?

Lola, we have thought about that.... Making the deeper side actually 30 inches and the shallower side, the standard 24, so it would be flush that way. That is what my wife wants, but we really need more space between the island that will be in middle of kitchen.

We are doing custom cabinets, so maybe we will do 27 deep and then the shallow ones will be 21 inches. I think that might make for better head space?

You should put shallow open shelves instead of cabinets on the right from the microwave. It will break up the monotony and won't stick out in your face as much:)

Could you pull out the base cabinet and make the countertop depth 30" and then continue across with 24"? Or split the difference and pull out the base cabinets 3" and make the countertop 27" and continue across with 21"depth cabinets?

Thanks aggie, good idea, unfortunately I'm not sure my wife likes the look. Your idea is definitely something to think about though!!

Pal, I think that is what we will end up doing! I actually just left s friends house and noticed one of her countertops seemed shallow.... So I measured.... The counter top was 19 inches deep, with 42 inch upper cabinets that are 12 inches deep! It definitely felt less than normal, but for that small area, it felt comfortable.

Ahhh, also!.... I need the more shallow part of the bottom cabinets to be already 21 inches deep, to get the wine fridge in there! Lol

Excuse my awkward photoshopping skills, but I like Aggie's idea, and I'd suggest putting a cabinet between the cooktop and the bumped in corner. Also, you need more drawers in the bases, and if you are pulling the bases out to 27", you can have upper cabinets a few inches deeper. With 15" upper cabinets, the open shelves could be as deep as 9".

    GW Kitchens discussions--all drawer bases.

Not awkward at all... Nice photoshopping! I like it. Thank you for the ideas, but unfortunately I don't think my wife,(we), like the idea of the open shelving. I think we will end up doing 27 inches in the deep part and 21 on the shallow part! Buy the way... On the right side of the cabinets you see an empty wall space, about 2.5 feet of space which will be used as cubbies for kids backpacks and "stuff". The back door is in the l right next to it.

All of your input has been greatly appreciated... Except the first person to comment.....unfortunately her comment was impersonal, arrogant and not completely correct!
